This month's issue of Atomic Ranch features a delicious stop-and-stare exterior makeover to a typical mid-century brick home. See the 'before' after the jump...

Seth Wilson and Jennifer Ellis were looking to modernize the exterior of their home. With the help of Seth's brother Webster Wilson they brought this home into the 21st century by creating a work of art while still maintaining the house's integrity and roots.

The project began with painting the brick and T-111 siding dark grey and adding floating wood screens on the building that also extend into fencing the landscape, defining other spaces and helping to create privacy. The rest of the project concluded with a membrane roof with soffits, fascia, custom gutters, and recessed lighting. I love the small details where they tied in the new style and palette with the custom benches and tables.

I could just sit and stare at this makeover for hours without ever stepping inside the house. I give it two thumbs up.

Shaw's Original Fir...
This is without exaggeration the nicest house facade I have ever seen.
Love it! Amazing look.
Drop-dead gorgeous in its level of restraint. The charcoal brick and siding and the red trim...excellent. I have one question about the floating exterior screens, which I love the look of : how do you clean behind them? Don't you get a buildup of spider webs, dirt, etc?
(Wish there was a better photo of "before".)
Wow. I just adore that folded-looking bench in front. And, you know, everything!
I confess I find most MCM a great waste of materials and space. Modernism is very easy to do badly, but this is an outstanding exception. Excellent make-over, excellent use of materials and a limited palette.
I want to see inside!
Yay Missoula, Montana! I could recognize those gorgeous rolling golden mountains anywhere! A beautiful house in a beautiful town!
I love this it is so fresh, the colors pop and the feel is structured but so serene.
I cannot figure out what's going on with those mountains in the first picture. They look like they were photoshopped to appear covered in lava or something! Especially since the house itself is not that bright and sun-filled in the same photo.
I'm usually in the purist, keep it as is camp, but this is crazy gorgeous! Love it.
look at that view!
Usually I am terrified when I see painted brick but this looks wonderful and it's sooooo tasteful!
I rent in a neighborhood that is nearby a cluster of MCM homes. When ever I walk my dogs I am always trying to imagine what they may look like if they were brought back to what they were supposed to be.
Well done before and after! I'd love to see more of this.
What kind of wood was used to construct the floating screens and fencing?
@BUNDALLOW haha! I registered just to ask that. I thought that looked like Mt Jumbo in the background!! The house looks so beautiful now. I hope it inspired other home owners in the area to follow suit!
WOW i LOVE this! the wood is amazing. fabulous work!!
Good question about the floating wood panels - any answers out there? Also, how about climate - would this work upstate NY? Absolutely beautiful exterior -
