Name: Jennifer Dyer
Location: Hollywood Hills, California
Size: 2960 square feet
Years lived in: 1 1/2 years
Jennifer has a designer's eye for confidently pulling together different styles across a mixture of unique furnishings. She loves scavenger finds — her leather dining room side chair was found on the side of the road. She is not afraid to shop at high and low sources to create a personal and unique home. At the end of the day, it comes down to the design and not the price tag.

APARTMENT THERAPY: Do you have a method for finding great deals on furniture or accessories?
JENNIFER DYER: No. There is no rhyme or reason to it. You almost have to treat it like a hobby. Look when you don't need anything because that is when you find something you love. If you are looking for something, it is Murphy's Law that you won't be able to find it.
APARTMENT THERAPY: What is your best scavenger find?
JENNIFER DYER: My eat-in kitchen table. It was painted a horrible shade of pink and sitting in the back of a truck at a flea market. However, the style and size was perfect. I bought it for $125 and refinished it. It ended up being walnut and turned out beautifully.
APARTMENT THERAPY: What is your favorite resource for finding great steals?
JENNIFER DYER: Definitely flea markets.
APARTMENT THERAPY: What do you look for when you are shopping flea markets?
JENNIFER DYER: I am not specifically shopping for anything. I go and if I see something I love, I buy it. If I leave with nothing, that's OK too.
APARTMENT THERAPY: Any advice for mixing scavenger finds with expensive furnishings?
JENNIFER DYER: If you are buying furniture, you are more than likely need to fully repurpose it (ie: refinish it, reupholster it and change the hardware). You can't expect that keeping it as is will be OK beside expensive pieces. However, if you put a bit of money into it, it will coordinate nicely. It may be more than you expected to spend in the end but you can't put a price on uniqueness, which is hopefully the reason you bought it in the first place.

Apartment Therapy Survey:
My Style: I do not like to define myself as having a specific style. I combine many styles and genres. If I see something I like I usually buy it and make it work. This way, my house looks collected, not designed, and that is my goal with all projects. I will leave an area empty before simply filling it just to have it complete. Buying the right thing takes time and patience. I like to walk into a room and not know what to look at first. So often people are too concerned about the furniture and rugs, but it's really the art, lighting, accessories, and smaller details that pull a home together. I am a huge proponent for originality and purposely shop at vintage stores, markets, and antique stores and I often repurpose old furniture.
Inspiration: Travel is always such a huge inspiration for me. For this house specifically, I just kept thinking 'eclectic Hamptons.' I make an effort to buy something for my home every time I am abroad, even if it means rearranging what I currently have. My inspiration changes constantly and I won't repeat color combinations from previous homes.
Favorite Element: This is so simple - I love that 80% of the house is on the same floor and that the house isn't too large. I love single story homes. I think they have a better flow and energy. I get to enjoy all of my house all of the time since the family room and kitchen are on opposite ends and I have to walk thru most rooms to reach either. I also love that the house was built in 1947. Yes, older houses can be more maintenance, but it adds a character that becomes harder to attain with new construction.
Biggest Challenge: Deciding what to do. As a designer I see so many things, new fabrics, lighting, rugs, color combos, and furniture all the time. I can easily tell a client what their home needs to look like, but when it comes to my own...I am often indecisive. I am careful not to be too trendy as I prefer things to be timeless.
What Friends Say: Just today I had a friend say that if she had the money to gut her house that she'd have me do everything and she said "you're style and eye for details are top notch. Your work is just as good as anything I have seen in a magazine." I was so happy to hear she thought that. I am hard on myself. I can be a perfectionist.
Biggest Embarrassment: Nothing. I am happy and thankful to have such a nice home.
Proudest DIY: I hire professionals to take care of painting, construction, and all install details. I am not good at DIY projects, so it's best that I stick to what I know: choosing colors, fabrics, lighting, designing furniture, and shopping for the perfect vintage accessories.
Biggest Indulgence: Artwork and rugs. Those are two items you cannot skimp on. Cheap is cheap and it shows with these items, so spend the money. You will have the art forever and good rugs get better with age. I have art clustered together even in the hallway leading to the laundry room.
Best Advice: Designing a house correctly takes time and the biggest mistake you can make is three fold: First, if you buy things quickly just to fill a space, you won't love it and will grow tired of it. Most likely you will re-do it within a few years, thus ending up spending twice the money you would have if you had just waited to find the right pieces. Second, buy classic sofas, chairs, and larger items and accessorize with trendy pieces. The design world is constantly evolving and you don't want to be stuck with certain styles when they are no longer popular. Third, do not match. There's nothing worse than having a set of furniture that is the same design, so mix side tables, cocktail tables, nightstands, and beds.
Dream Source: Estate sales. Most antique and vintage stores in Palm Beach and Miami. Weekend markets in Bangkok, Sol Art Gallery in St. Petersburg, Russia, and Portabella Road in London.

White Enamel Flatwa...
Lovely home! Can you share the name of the wall color in your dining room?
Well, it is a lovely house. Very elegant, beautiful styling, gorgeous muted colors etc etc, but all I keep thinking in every picture is wow, that must have cost a fortune. I guess that's not necessarily a bad thing, but takes a little of the pleasure out of a house tour for me.
it's all very nice but also way too decorator-y for me.
stunning!!
a.shaw: my thought exactly!
This house is gorgeous and while it may out of my price range, the decor gives me ideas for my 1,200 sq. ft. townhouse. These looks, no matter where they are, can be adapted to work for your home no matter what the square footage. I want that kitchen! (:
Oh myyyyy.. This is the best house tour ever.. So clean, crisp and relaxed.. If you need a house sitter, pls put my name on the list...
Beautiful home and style! I dont mind looking at a house as expenisive as this. It gives me great ideas! I def want to try the grey striped walls!
gosh, the best tour ever. anywhere. what a wonderful sanctuary. lust, i lust for that house.
Beautiful home, a little too big and elaborate for my taste, but still very beautiful. I love the bench in the bathroom and felt my heart flutter when I saw the walk-in closet!!
That Wood Table is really nice... I got to get me a table like that one of these days. So sculptural and organic! The powder room is pretty neat too! I love the slim sink and mirror on the wall.
Beautiful and elegant!
The bathroom with stripe wall, is that a wall paper or paint? Love it! I'd love to that in my powder room!
everyone's jealousy is uncomfortable. the house is beautiful. no two ways around it.
the home is stunning and sophisticated but completely comfortable and welcoming. I went through the photos 2 times. Love some of the art as much as the furniture and bones of the house.
Jennifer's design business must be very lucrative. I can see some very expensive pieces in her home. None the less her home is lovely. I really love the painting of the children. It's such a warm and enveloping piece of art. Jennifer, can you please name the artist. The colors are so soft. I'm dying to find something like this.
I commented earlier but I didn't look at all your pictures. The place is really well put together. Classic and elegant, yet funky. I love the built-ins above the console table, I love the closet and light fixture in it. The red door is nice, and I love the built-in window seats & banquettes.
Hmm. It's not okay to match anything (even nightstands) but it's perfectly fine to karate chop all your pillows???
I lovethe way the faucet is set of to the right in the powder room also. Never thought about doing it that way. (hmmm!)
(... that is not what "repurpose" means....)
The kitchen of course is amazing. And yay for dark wood floors! Otherwise, it doesn't have that something that makes something inherently not my style appeal to me....
This is a gorgeous home and I really love the artwork.
Incredibly successful color schemes!!!
And for someone that lives off black & gold, those chairs in the closet just about brought me to tears!
BRAVO!
This is one serene and stunning home, Jennifer (though no one should have that many shoes! :D). I want to reach in and GRAB that driftwood lamp in the dining room.
Love the use of the funky shabby chic doors as backdrop for the two matching sculptures. Loads of great artistic touches, great inspiration. Great artwork, particularly the monk boys, really lovely.
Looks like you have a home office in your closet. I wish my closet were big enough to do that.
What is the soft light blue color in the living room?!
Very nice and tasteful home. A lot of space for one person, though (gotta add that since I got in trouble for commenting on the guy's house in Sherman Oaks the other day...).
What I like best about this place is the owner's advice. This especially:
"I will leave an area empty before simply filling it just to have it complete."
I do that too. It requires patience and discipline, but it pays off in the end.
monicas, my thoughts exactly. This house is beautiful, 'decorator-ey' or not. Yes, some of the styling is a bit contrived (am I really to believe her sexiest pair of pumps and her Vuitton Icare bag just happened to be on display the day of the photoshoot?) but it's nothing I haven't seen the best home decor magazines do before, so why are people hatin' so much?
Jennifer, congratulations on having a stunning home and just remember, haters gon' hate.
Lovely, lovely home without looking like a catalogue or show home. One thing that bugs me, because I am a nerd, the telescope. It's pointing inside the room.
Besides that, I'll be showing up next week with my luggage. *winks*
I have light fixture envy. And probably a few other envies.
I think this is very nice. Wow people...most of these comments are nice but Buster1 really? An Ethan Allen showroom. You obviously don't know what you are talking about and as I can't remember seeing vintage furniture ever at Ethan Allen and BadJane...I don't think she means don't match your nightstands. I think she means don't go to Mathias Brothers and buy a dresser that matches the bed that matches the nightstands. duh!
Um . . . PERFECT!!! :)
Oh god i am so insanely jealous. I mean that as a compliment :-)
absolutely stunning. I really really really really really really really love this house!
Love the striped chairs and the soft colors in this house. Thanks for sharing:)
Lovely ..... Enjoyed seeing....thank you for sharing
Can you post the Benjamin Moore paint colors you used? Specifically the dining room and living room?
This house is fabulous, I love all of it. I normally am looking for something smaller scale on AT but for some reason I find this tour and designer an inspiration. thanks!
Wow, wow, wow. Such a beautiful and elegant home.
Stunning- yet calm and serene.
A very skillful blending of different styles into a cohesive whole.
I am particularly loving the chunky white and gray veined marble counter tops that seem to be repeated throughout the home, in the bathroom, bar area and kitchen. Really ties everything together.
Also love the living room rug- subdued, elegant, and perfect- ditto for the dining room chandy.
One of the best AT Home Tours I've seen.
thank you for showing us your home.
i wish she would hurry up and reply back to our questions. ha.
The painting of monks is my favorite thing. I also love the giant blue sectional placed under the big corner windows. And that mirror in the bathroom is awesome. Overall, not my taste, but a very beautiful house.
wow wee! I love everything (except for the yellow wing chair in the dining room - not a fan) But I looooovvee everything else.
Hi everyone! It's Jennifer. Thanks for the wonderful comments and those of you who don' like it...well, you can't please everyone. I will try to answer all your questions:
1. The striped wall is fabric that I had backed and used at wallpaper. It's gray with a thin blue stripe on the edge of the gray stripe. It is Barbara Barry from Kravet. I do not have the actual name in front of me but email me thru my website if you want it. I will find it for you.
2. Sdt43 asked for the name of the artist that painted the "children". I think you are referrng to the monks?? If so, I am so sorry. I don't have his name. I literally was at the weekend market in Bangkok and found this piece. The artist could not speak English and I had to find someone in the market that did to negotiate the sale. They took it off the strechers and I rolled it up and checked it as oversized luggage to get it home. It was only $700. In LA, that would have been $7000.
3. Paint is all Benjamin Moore.

Living is-Seattle Gray #2130-70

Now to address some of the funny comments. No, Marc my shoes and bags weren't just sitting out like that in my closet. They set it up like that. I wasn't even in my closet when they shot it so thanks for at least noting that it was "posed"...because it was. And yes, I have too many shoes.
Some people commented that this must have been a fortune- although the house itself was expensive, the interior was a mix of pieces. Some cheap and some expensive so for the size of the house, it wasn't that bad.
That telescope comment made me laugh and I swear it's turned the right way. When you look in the eyepiece there is a reflective mirror in the back so the actual opening is pointing out the window. However, I am not that great at using it!
Hope that helps.
Oh...and Merriam Webster aka ledidoptery, I am aware repurpose means " to convert, or use in another format". I say re-do or refurbish. Although I have taken scarfs and made them into pillows so that would technically qualify as 'repurpose'. ha
BadJane- yep, it's perfectly fine to karate chop your pillows but it's not very appealing to be sarcastic. I didn't mean, don't match your nightstands. I mean don't go to Pottery Barn and buy a whole matching set: bed, dresser, nightstands like most people's grandparents did. Jeez.
Scarves...not scarfs...I gotta quit typing so fast. ;-)
total house envy right about....NOW!
Absolutely adore this house. Love it all especially the lighting.
Jennifer it's me again. Thanks for pointing out that those are monks. Still love the picture. If you ever even consider getting rid of it(sooooo not) contact me.
Very nice. Curious. It's okay to have a home office in a closet here but not to have a toilet in a laundry room in the other place? Perplexes me. Functionality should always come first IMO
It's great, but I got bored about half way through. it's a typical, California, decorated house. Of course I would love to have the opportunity (money) to have such lovely things. I got bored, sorry...
Oh my! That kitchen is absolutely gorgeous! I would actually cook (or at least attempt) to cook in there. Stunning!
The rich are so full of swell ideas aren't they?!
Nice place.
Is it just me or are the apartments on AT getting bigger and bigger?
Jennifer, your home is amazing, and the kitchen is to die for!
Beautiful "apartment". So the therapy for an apartment is to buy a house? Nice out of the box thinking ;-)
This was so much fun to look at! So what that it's a really big house for one person and that person has expensive taste and it looks decoratorish? (Which is probably because she's a designer?) It's still super fun to look through the pictures and I can find inspiration for my apartment even if I'm not going to go out and buy a houseful of the exact same pieces she owns. Who would do that anyway? (Kiiiiiind of the same way I can look through VOGUE and find inspiration and then not go and buy the entire outfit I see in the photoshoot, but still use some of the ideas.) Anyway, this is a beautiful house - when I see a house tour that is incredibly not my style but I want to move in anyway, I know they did a good job. :-)
It is stunning, but I agree you are showing more of the bigger homes and I enjoy the smaller more human scale homes and apartments featured. Not too many of us have the funds to decorate like this.
"At the end of the day, it comes down to the design and not the price tag."
Must be nice to be rich. Although this is a beautiful home, I wish you would focus more on homes that are within the reach of your readership (it is called Apartment Therapy after all...), instead of the homes of the wealthy few. I can see that in any design/lifestyle magazine, and that was what used to set this Web site apart from that.
The house is impeccably styled, but to me it looks like a showroom and not a place where someone actually lives. It also felt a touch ostentatious. I guess it's not surprising the one thing I really loved was the dining room side chair that was found on the side of the road!
Your home is lovely. Living room was sort of boring, but you have really great taste. Big issue for me...in such an expensive closet, why all those plastic walmart hangers?
Lastly, why so many people with size envy? LOL
Where is the gorgeous table in the living room from? The one with a glass top and branches underneath?
HI JENNIFER, I LOVE YOUR HOUSE!!!!!
I HOPE YOU CAN SHARE WHO MAKES THE CUSTOM RUG IN YOUR CLOSET?? I REALLY WANT TO DO MY DAUGHTER 'S ROOM IN THAT COLOR!!!!!
I'VE BEEN FOLLOWING YOUR WORK SINCE LAST YEAR AND HOPE TO SEE MORE!
BEST!
While I understand this is a larger scale home that belongs to someone with a higher budget than the general demographic of readers on this site... the fact that people are blatently blasting the homeowner for sharing her personal space and style and her income is really unnecessary. And just rude. She is a successful, happy and well admired decorator and designer. I'm sure when her home showed up in Lonny a couple months ago no on had a problem. Regardless of the scale of a home, I believe we can all learn from eachother.
Me and "P" found serenity here... Thanks for inviting us in to see your stunningly creative abode. Home is truly where the heart us...and you've certainly captured ours.
I know it is well edited, a decorator style and very richy look....but that is why we love this home. It is so pleasant to gaze at.This is what i want to learn and get into...proper place for a properly sized furnitures. The light and dark furniture smartly melded in one cohesive elegant stylish way of expressing what is perfect for the owners eyes...is well applauded!!! I love it!
Your home is so warm and inviting. I love everything about it (especially the furniture and light fixtures). You did an amazing job decorating.
At first look, I thought boring, but after really looking at the detail, this is an amazingly decorated home that doesn't look like it costs much. Even though it isn't an apartment. This is a good transition from broke funky thrift, to classy sophisticated comfy. For 30 somethings like myself, I am stealing these ideas!
One of my favourites. Had to come back for a re-view !
Great home! I really like the well-edited choices and the smart paint color choices. Really inspiring! Thanks for sharing. I am a bit jealous... in a good way. :)
er, "well-edited furniture choices"
fast typing...
This was a great tour because it's full of useful ideas. Like the small tables (metal and bamboo), the small blue and white planter, the great artwork, interesting light fixtures...Those things can appeal to anyone on any budget. Now about that kitchen...
Jen, your new place is GORGEOUS!! xx Erin
I love your home and it is so inspiring! It was the painting that caught my eye first, having come from South of Thailand - I thought it was very South East Asian. I am wondering if you could share where you bought your beautiful buffet in your dining room? Thank you.
