Name: Jen Ramos
Location: Henderson, Nevada
Size: 2,800 square feet
Years lived in: 8 months
At the end of last year, Jen started the process of remodeling her kitchen. She posted a few inspirational photos and a photo of her kitchen on her design blog, Made By Girl. I was so excited to see the transformation that I kept checking in and waiting to see the final result of her new kitchen. Jen gave me a peek at the rest of her house and I couldn't resist a full house tour.

I am in love with Jen's home, and in particular, I'm very envious of her closet — she had shelves built just for her shoe collection! The closet also has a chandelier and a separate vanity with a large mirror. The entire space is very simple and elegant, but the added bursts of color make it very fun and youthful.

Apartment Therapy Survey:
My Style: I don't think I have a specific style...or do I? Usually If I see something I like, I buy it.
Inspiration: One of my inspirations came from the home of J Crew's Jenna Lyons. Her NY townhouse and her personal style are amazing. I was very much inspired by her home's dark floors, white walls, chandeliers, zebra hide rugs and architectural features. That was one thing my townhouse was missing, that gorgeous old style crown molding. However, being that my home is in Nevada I wasn't surprised that particular design aspect would be missing. Sure, I can add it, but it's not the same.
Favorite Element: The open floor plan on the main floor. We can see all the way through from one end of the home to the other.
Biggest Challenge: The biggest challenge has been making sure everything flows. I find so many things I like and then realize that it doesn't fit in with everything else that's going on. I have to somehow keep the continuity but make each room look distinct in it's own way.
What Friends Say: They always seem to mention how high the ceilings are and how open the space feels. They also love the view from the 3rd floor where you can see the entire Las Vegas Strip, especially at night!
Biggest Embarrassment: The fact that we still have stock cabinetry, though we had the kitchen cabinets re-painted so they don't look so standard. Standard cabinets are the worst, they look and feel ugly. For now we'll keep them until we can afford to have the kitchen of our dreams. Oh yeah, and the bare wall across from my dining table. There's a huge painting and nothing underneath it yet. We're hoping to build a console table for that wall to add some interest!
Proudest DIY: The book shelving in the home office area. My guy built it and it's such an added benefit to the space.
Biggest Indulgence: Probably my biggest indulgence was changing out all the standard lighting that came with the home. We added interesting looking pendants and sconces that seem to fit the home a lot better. We also switched out all the recessed bulbs and added bulbs that gave more of a spotlight feel, it really made a significant difference.
Best Advice: From my mom when she said, "Don't worry, your home will all come together soon, little by little. Don't rush it."

Shaw's Original Fir...
We've been following Jen's blog for a while and are so inspired by her knack for pulling things together in a way that feels chic and uncluttered. Go Jen!
-Teresa
LOVE IT! Inspiring and makes me feel lady-like :)
I actually like your shoes collection better! haha
This might be my dream home. In fact we have some of the same furnishings and accessories! Love it! And looooove that closet. Beautiful.
White walls done right!! I love the different color dots done on canvas....an easy idea and looks so cute!
I almost cried at the closet pictures. Beautiful place!
Obsessed. She can do no wrong in my book!
Swoon. I love Jen's home (and blog) and am so excited to more pics of her gorgeous home. So jealous. She has serious style.
Me and my stock cabinets (THE HORROR!) love your home. :) btw, your stock cabinets are nice.
You had me at the shoe rack!
Love your blog and your home. The white is so calming and must be really cool during Las Vegas summers.
totally gorgeous home!
When i look at this i think... No Kids !!!
love it! the picture with the boxer killed me, such a cutie!
I love the contrast between white and dark wood. That with the pops of color, and gold and stripes here and there = perfection.
Ok, that's it! I want your closet!!
Totally cool beaded chandelier in the dining area.
Lucky sod!
It looks staged because I'm a neat freak and I have no kids... Which helps. My dogs like to keep things clean too. Yes, I actually did purchase a lot of stuff on the Internet. Have u been to lv??? Not the best place to buy furniture .
P.s. I'm not an interior designer. And I'll leave you with this Spanish saying" para Los gustos se hicieron Los colores"
Sidney: do we all have to have high end luxury throughout our home? I happen to like west elm ....and for personal? All my art is personal, I enjoy it and that's why it's on my wall. Btw.. Not sure you were on my site, because this is NOT a rental. My husband & I bought this home last year in October. considering it's in las Vegas... It's a pretty unique place. as dor the cabinets, they are standard & it's what you get with all tract housing here in LV and sorry but they aren't the best quality and they are awful. Not sure how that comment makes me full of myself. Your making judgements without knowing me. Thanks for taking a look though I appreciate it. :)
Thanks so much to everyone else who commented so far. God bless you all & have great weekend ;)
Jen You Go Girl Well Said :)
Nothing personal but I was waiting to see the reason why this is on AT house tour and finally the CLOSET!!. For the amount of color and fun in the choice of shoes and accessories, I was surprised the lack of color through your home. A bit sterile for my taste but nicely put together.
I think it's all beautiful Jen! So clean and fresh feeling! What is important is that you love it:)
Very gracious response from Jen considering usual judgemental comments. Jen what does the Spanish quote mean?
Beautiful! Sophisticated with a splash of girly.
What an absolutely gorgeous home! Very tranquil, indeed.
I really like what she has accomplished here considering it is, what she describes, as track housing in Las Vegas. Lovely lighting, flow, layout, and aesthetic.
I guess I would like to see Jen branch out into some vintage pieces. I think she has an amazing eye, and her aesthetic could benefit from exploring objects and furnishings from the 1920s-1970s... maybe rely less on target/west elm and more on craigslist & vegas estate sales? Just a thought, said in a completely positive, non-judgey way.
Oh... and that closet: to die for.
The only comment I have is a piece of advice, as a perfumista: you should keep your perfumes somewhere cool and dark like your closet, as light and heat will make them go "off".
Nice job.
Jen, great responses and beautiful home!
For me, personally, there needs to be more color, and overall, it's a bit too spare, almost monastic. Almost looks like a staged property - the tiniest bit of colorful, playful clutter would make it more human, more alive. Having said that, though, I adore the chandelier in the dining room, as well as the pairing of the dark, spartan, clean-lined modern dining room table with those cane-back Louis chairs in white.
Wow, haters! If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all! Jen, your house is beautiful! I love the contrast of black and white with pops of color. I admire the courage and confidence it takes to put your home on the Internet for all the world to see. All too often people's creativity is stifled because we worry what others will think. What if they don't like it? Who cares?! What if they do? You just keep doin' what your doin' girl! And so what if your furniture comes from Target, West Elm or Wal-Mart; beauty is where you find it!
Clean, open, light-bathed, modern yet (mostly) comfortable, a mix of sophistication, minimalism, and playfulness... I wouldn't call this home "sterile" -- rather it's clear the owner puts a lot of importance on the value of space, light, and cleanliness. There's a lot of emphasis on function and flow, too.
She's added nice little details and nic-nacs without creating clutter, and a few touches of whimsy and "girlishness" I think help to make this house feel more "homey" without overloading on kitch and cutesy. Although the overall look of the home is modular and somewhat minimal, it's those little bits of whimsy that make it feel inviting and lived-in.
Just because it's pop art doesn't mean it's "impersonal" ; it may not be the sort of thing that I would want to hang in my home, but clearly the owner enjoys it, and that's the point: she likes it, and it works as a dash of colour and movement in her otherwise achromatic and modular space.
The two things that rub me the wrong way in this tour are the clear plastic stools in the kitchen (they look totally uncomfortable and slightly silly) and the gold accent on the kitchen light fixtures (I think the gold clashes badly, as the rest of the kitchen has a "cool" pallette; a silver tone would be more harmonious IMO.)
Even before reading through the comments I knew this AT House Tour would bring out the haters.
Pretty? check
Girlie? check
Pretty spacious? check
Nice stuff? check
No chips, dings, or scratches? check
The color pink anywhere? double check
It's a pretty house with, I'm sure, a pretty owner. Deal with it.
Jennifer, thank you for showing us your home.
I'm not really big on lots of clothes or closets, but I have to give this one a bravo! bravo!
Except for the carpeting in the bedroom. I like what I see, clean lines, nothing overdone. Good work.
I think she has done a great job turning a tract home into something personal. I love her artwork and the light fixtures and the dark floors. There is too much white for me--I would love to see the natural colors of that shell chandelier brought into the living room and other spaces somehow to offset the starkness. But overall I think she did a lot to make a cookie-cutter house her own.
I was so excited to see this house tour because I also live in a townhome like this (looks like a townhome to me from the pictures) and I was thrilled to see how she decorated the space and made a ordinary sized home look amazing. Lovin it!
What a fun tour! It looks lovely, and it's awesome that you did this with affordability in mind. The overall feeling I got from your home is light femininity.
Don't let the haters get to you. There are actually people who think that if a home doesn't cater to their particular personal tastes, it's fair game to criticize for things as petty as what stores you choose from.
First of all: Jen - your house is gorgeous.
Second, to all the negative commenters - it's OK if this is not your personal style. But you don't have to be ugly. Not everyone has unlimited funds or the time to spend scouring flea markets, attic and yard sales for 'unique' items for the house. Sometimes you want to call Crate and Barrel and have them deliver it! And not every couple has children and lives (or wants to live) in romper room.
Jen, I admire your ability to remain gracious when responding to such weirdly hostile comments. Excellent work.
you had me with the black table and white chairs!!!
@ the-bee-charmer.....ditto to what you said!
Jen, do you live alone? Beside the handsome looking pooch (not sure if it's a he/she,) do you live alone? I read you said you and your husband purchased the home but don't see his name on the top of the page with yours.
I'm use to seeing the entire families names including the pets there.
Your home is lovely, not particularly my taste, but you put much thought and work into it. Like others mentioned, I'd like to have seen more color and possibly some warmth using plants. You have so much natural light they'd flourish in your home. Also, like someone mentioned an older antique piece? Like a hutch? Or perhaps armoire? Even an old flea market piece of furniture you can restore and reuse in your home as or for storage?
I don't think there's anything wrong purchasing furniture online but I'd of liked to see a few flea market or antique store pieces - even something from your moms home, (that has special meaning...)
I lived in my home for years and I'm still saving for a certain piece I've been wanting for like ever. I can't afford to purchase everything I want but for me it's so worth the waiting and planning on where that one piece will go. Good luck Jen and thank you for sharing your home!!
Hi Jen!
No need to feel the need to upgrade cabinets since the ones you have keep the simplicity of your kitchen. I like them!
I, too, have a townhome (currently a rental) and when I move back in, I will certainly begin updating fixtures. After seeing how you updated yours, I think this is key in making it look less like a tract home.
Great job and love the pup.
Very white. Probably good for the hot nevada weather but I'm surprised her furry friend there doesn't get his hair everywhere! Very jealous of the closet/shoe collecton.
Jen ,if it's just you, your hubby and no kids why live in Henderson NV? You spoke of the options for decor being awful and you're an artist/designer. Why not live in a more accommodating city that's closer to the action and creative vibe? Unless you're a part-time craps dealer making bank have a sweet job at the Hoover Dam... ;)
Ah Ha! E.F.I. has got a great idea. Plants would go a long way to adding some "life" to the place and cutting the starkness. I wish I could keep plants alive. It's probably good that I can't. I'd end up with a jungle in the house.
Mr. Modtomic
Jen,
Don't pay any attention to the negative comments. I had to go back and look for the target, west elm items..... I have been to vegas and there is no where to buy cool furniture. Your home is beautiful! Great job!
I love this home. It makes great use of the color theme, providing a cool crisp look and feels very accessible. Great job Jen!
who would have guessed there is such loveliness like this in henderson?! so well done. modern, clean yet personal. well done jennifer! something to be proud of.
one question i forgot to ask, where did you get that rad horse hook?
Nice to see a great house where the lounge area is facing a TV! Some designers make out that admitting you watch TV by having it visible in your sitting room is a crime. Well done. LOVE the pink!
Beautiful. I didn't realize that it was a tract house. Doesn't look like one to me.
I think this is my favorite house tour! I'm about to make the switch to all white in my home but struggling with what shade. I'm totally using this house as my inspiration. Love love your style. fantastic home:)
I lived in Las Vegas for 6 years and am used to seeing the same cookie cutter adobe style homes in every neighborhood that have no sense of style inside or out. Jen, BRAVO! I am utterly impressed with what you did to a Las Vegas home. It is MAGNIFICENT! You give hope to Henderson ;)
glamorous.
A wonderful palate for a home in Las Vegas. It's light, airy and organic. The whites and natural tones create a calm respite from what lives out the third floor window. Beautiful kitchen. Sensible use of wall space.
Beautiful home--I love how you let your personality shine throughout! Gorgeous closet--I am definitely jealous!
I think my favorite part about your home is the bathroom, it looks so serene!
Wow this is an amazing design, It looks absolutely gorgeous. Thinking if it could have a nice fireplace would make it look even better.
tuinhaard
thanks for sharing your house, very nice job, your home is so clean and serene , i wish i have a house like this. i love the white walls an the pop of colors, i do not why people do not like to much the white walls but i think is fantastic way to go and you can use color in accesories, i think more people like clutter i do not why? , they do not like to see places like yours , they prefer to be in a places with a lot things, who need all that staff around and they call your place steryl, and ithink this the way to go when you make the decoration in your palce.....
Loooooove it. All the white with bright pops of color is totally my style! Great tour!
Nice job! I am a native Californian who lived in Las Vegas (Southern Highlands)from 2006-2010. The lack of design choices out there and the number of de-personalized homes out there abound. It's great to see someone did something with their tract home/cookie cutter/box. It just shows the possibilities that those homes have in the right hands.
I've gotta say, I am thrilled to be in Southern Florida with access to great design again. Of course, I always miss LA!
Absolutely adore Jen's Home. I featured these photos on my blog as well today! :) Love the simplicity with the pops of color.
http://somethingbrue.blogspot.com
Wow. When can I move in? This looks like it belongs in LA not LV! Absolutely gorgeous. This isn't even my style and I love it. That closet! That bathroom! That kitchen. (swoon)
Jen you were most gracious in your responses!
I usually don't like all white walls but with the wonderful art and the pops of color make this home beautiful! Well done and beauty is found all over the place! Love your home !!
fan-bloody-tastic
Jen, Your house is beautiful! It's so clean and crisp and modern. I love it! I love the white as well. To me, our society is over-saturated with the warm tones in any climate. It's refreshing to see such coolness...c'est la vie.
Wow!!!! I really like what you have done with your space. So true re always being made to feel bad if TV is visible. I have done exactly what you have done. White tv unit with some flowers and decorative items surrounding.
Your Janet Kngwarreye is amazing! I love it. Her work is incredible.
WOW! What is there not to love about this home? It's gorgeously furnished, warm and THAT NATURAL LIGHT is to swoon over!!! I'd love to see the backyard...perhaps on your next post?
My parents live in Las Vegas. Believe me, nobody's house looks like this. Congratulations on bucking the tide!
Quick question...where did you get the lights for the bathroom over the mirror?
Ta!!!! They are gorgeous!
Beautiful house. If you don't mind, where did you get the sectional sofa? Thanks.
I can't believe that AT had most of the comments deleted that did not favor this home. Pathetic that people are unable to voice opinion here.
The art work (aboriginal or otherwise) is disappointing. Every other aspect of your home is exquisite.
What are you using for your perfume storage? I love it!
I fell in love in the foyer! I could live right there! A lot more white than I could live with, but beautiful and elegant!
I like this house, although I personally would like more color, particularly in the bedroom, but that's just me. I read about her kitchen makeover, and I think she did a fabulous job. I like the aboriginal artwork. I'm not as much of a fan of Jen's artwork (sorry!) but everyone has different taste and I know she has a big following.
I love...in the biggest font imaginable...the pendent lights in the kitchen!!!
so girly!
I love your house!! It feels so bright and clean, but has a lot of personality. Most of the places on here I'll like a room or too, but your whole house is awesome :)
Oh my God, my partner and I absolutely fell in love with the Barcelona Sofa we saw at SoBe Furniture (www.sobefurniture.com). Simply gorgeous. Also have you seen Artefacto...so stunning you just need to go.
