Name: Rob and Julie Maigret
Location: Los Feliz — Los Angeles, California
Size: 3000 square feet
Years lived in: 3 — Own
Interior designer Julie Maigret and her husband Rob, live in their dream house right at the foothills of Griffith Park. Fashioning a current spin on Mid Century Modern influenced design, they have created a warm and inviting space to dwell in.
Many thanks to our mutual friend Lori Fradella, who has in the past sold and helped source pieces for Julie and her clients, for connecting us for this house tour. Julie is no stranger to design and understanding spacial planning. She explains that the most essential part of designing your home is "that you create a home that truly represents you...or the person you aspire to be."
With 3,000 square feet of room to play in, you can imagine all the different ways the design of this home could have gone. Julie and Rob's main goal was to stay true to the original era and the architectural history. They brought in a handful of vintage throwbacks, balancing them with contemporary pieces from around LA. Some of the most amazing elements in the home were the artwork. "When we first moved in, we were intimidated by all the blank wall space. The artwork represents a lot of research, collaboration and compromise; and a number of paintings by Rob's dad." Noting Slim Aarons as a major dream resource, you can see how Julie wanted to preserve the Mid Century Architectural appeal of her home.
This home and its roots in old Hollywood's Los Feliz district boasts a charming spacious floor plan and lovely views of the hills. The lighting and the breezy airy feeling really lend to the calming Southern California vibe. "Los Angeles style is all about coming home to a peaceful, comfortable place that will make you forget that you have just been sitting in traffic for 2 hours."
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: A clean, comfortable, current twist on mid century modern
Inspiration: Slim Aarons
Favorite Element: The spaciousness & peacefulness of the house. No small feat in Los Angeles!
Biggest Challenge: Figuring out how to make a space with white walls & white floors comfortable instead of cold
What Friends Say: "You should design my house (for free)."
Proudest DIY: Instead of hiring a landscape designer, I ended up designing our outdoor spaces with Annette Gutierrez from Pot-ted. I could not have wished for better results. Our succulent wall has taken on a life of its own, having been reproduced all over the country.
Biggest Indulgence: Our dining room furniture, which is thankfully timeless, and well worth the splurge.
Best Advice: Don't sacrifice comfort for style. You can have both if you look hard enough.

Nomade Express Slee...
This is one of my favorites homes I have seen on AT.. LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!! And those "Facebook, You-Tube, Skype" posters are amazing!!
It's very beautiful, stylish and meticulously arranged, even though I am not a fan of those Eames chairs, for instance. It's seems that it's a must have in so many homes and at some point becomes repetitive and they look the same. I also wonder if the best way to make a space with white floors and white walls less cold is by using what dining tables and white chairs.
love the concrete block planters -- always fun to see concrete salvaged -- great job!
That was supposed to read "white dining tables."
I love your Richard Avedon Beatles Posters...and your entire place for that matter!
Looooooooovvvvvveee your place. It´s amazing, :) congrats.
Really like it but I would reduce the decorative objects by about 1/3.
LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
all of it. well done!
i really wish that floorplans were included in house tours, so i could get a sense of the flow of homes.
This the first house tour where I've loved every picture, it's just gorgeous. And it looks lived in and liveable in too (not like a furniture museum as I'm afraid some house tours do). I'm sure so much work went into making this effortless look, but it's absolutely paid off, it's wonderful.
"...live in their dream house...."
no no, i'm pretty sure they're living in *my* dream house.
Oh my God I love these people.
Please adopt me, lovely people.
a dream house for certain. very well done. love the chairs --all the furnishings. nice posters.
Oh. Emm. Gee.
This home is INCREDIBLE! I'm in luuuuuuuvvvvv. That is one seriously awesome kitchen. I imagine there is some seriously awesome cooking going on in there too. I love how this is most definitely a grown-up home, but there are still lighthearted pieces all around. Beautiful couple and adorable doggies too! Big A+ all around! :-)
OMG I have never ever saw a house hour so beautiful... Stunning.. I want each room, each furniture in my apt... Dream on!!
One of the best house tours ever! Amazing place. I'm seriously coveting your art collection, (esp. the Rex Ray painting).
Firstly, let me confess that I visit Apartment Therapy about fifty times each day and this is the very first time I've felt compelled to comment. This home is simply flawless. The artwork is so well positioned and it is clear that the pieces were chosen with great consideration. The carpet is cool and makes me want to reconsider the hardwoods in my home. Every detail appears authentic to who you are and brings out the structural beauty of your home. This is fabulous! I'll probably view it again and again and again.
Ok we get it, you're rich. Great home!
Great home, guys! Thank you :)
I can't stop looking at this home tour.
Then I look around my own living room and I'm a little horrified.
This is my favorite home tour yet, partially because I salivate over midcentury modern.
Somehow I think they pay a good deal more for their rental home than I do mine...
hello.
i love your home.
ok.
wow ariple your comment is great! It is the greatest comment I have ever read on the website.
well thank you, I love your comment too.
Oh if Julie and Rob could only see the jealousy in my eyes! What a wonderful home!
And if Julie and Rob are reading... How did you manage the concrete planters? I'm assuming they're the normal concrete blocks so I'm stumped as to how you keep the plants in.
Love absolutely everything about this! We've been contemplating Flor tiles in our home too so I'm happy to see them executed so nicely.
great place!
i thought this house looked familiar...
http://www.designsponge.com/2011/10/sneak-peek-rob-julie-maigret.html
The house looks great but don't take my word for it. Look at the picture of Julie & Rob. The little dog in the picture looks so content & is likely thinking "This is the best house I ever lived in".
Can you design my home? (for free:)
WOW! Love every inch!
wow. you are all so positive & fabulous. THANKS for all the encouraging comments.
@Ivan Velinov - we warmed up the dining room with bright artwork in oranges, reds & yellows, which you can't see in the photos. otherwise, yes, would have been counter productive!
@ thekinseysix - you can find out more about how the planters were created here:
http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/la/gardening/modern-diy-outdoor-planter-093540
@mandyb - highly highly recommend Flor tiles. wish i invented them.
@RichinNJ - considering that our little Pico was rescued dodging traffic in a seedy part of town, yes, i do believe its the best house he's lived in!
thanks again, everyone. you have made my day.
julie maigret
Loved this!
PLEASE tell me where that poster Hi.I am in love with you.Ok. is from!!! Adore it!
you have impeccable taste. Love it!
Where's the "Biggest Embarrassment" question? Not that there would be any, but it's always interesting to hear the answer from the featured tour.
this might be a bit off topic, but what kind of dog is that? so cute.
every single room is perfectly done.
Their living room is eerily reminiscent of an extended family member's home here in WI. She was into MCM when it was original in the 50's/60's and never changed it through out the years.
I recently went through the house before she sold it and yours could be it's twin. Wow.
Love the white with splashes of colour. Love the photography and other art. Love the sense of humour. This is my style, fully conceptualized and executed. Thanks for sharing.
I love everything about the house but what I love most is that one of their dogs was rescued in LA traffic. Nice people with good taste.
I need that dining room - well, make it that entire house. So beautiful.
GUEST ROOM 1 - bedspread source? super cool.
Yet another house tour favourite. Sublime.
Love the paintings by yourdad/ father in law. Seriously, can I buy the one in the bedroom?
What and attractive couple.........of pooches! Ok, the humans are a very attractive couple as well. Beautiful home. I would want to show it off as much as possible too. the only negative is (and I think I'm also guilty of this); devotion to MCM purity. When all the furnishings are well known MCM pieces the space looks more like a showroom rather that a home. I think I've been doing the same thing because I love everything MCM, but it starts looking so generic.
@CBRAUN: According to their sources:
"Hi"- artwork by Adam Cohen

Can anyone please, please, please source the white with wood base planter in:

It's not in their resources notes...
Thanks!
Hunky husband!
Love the contemporary / 60's mix of styles. Works really, really well. The artwork is also fantastic...
Love the kitchen, look modern
At first I was shocked that Kathy Baker got plastic surgery to look 20 years younger, then married Jordan Knight. When I got over that I was shocked again by how perfect their house was! What a talented designer.
^ok, I didn't realize how old Kathy Baker was, (she looks great for her age!) so make that 30 years younger. You also look a lot like Meredith Monroe.
My favorite home ever on Apartment Therapy.
Ever.
Very beautiful house with great details.
i love this......
omg that dog<3
Everything looks so neat and clean! I love the placement of everything. They really have an eye for design. And that cinder block garden is really creative.
Does this hearken the return of white appliances? Please say it's so!
Lovely space! Lacks only some children to fill it up a little.
Best. HouseTour. Ever.
i'm with janet uws...this is a lovely house with carefully chosen objects of unarguable pedigree (love, love the dining room) but i found myself using my finger in some rooms to obscure the one or two extra decorative objects that seemed to diminish the impact of the whole (pillows/cushions, wall art, mirrored objects)
Does anyone have a source for the mirror above the bed? Many thanks!
Tres chic. A little too "catalogue perfect" for me but lovely nonetheless. I covet the light blue and brown velvet chairs, and the bed linens...
I'm completely design/decorating challenged, but trying to improve by looking at all the AT eye candy. This is certainly a gorgeous home. But I have a question... In the description the owner says they wanted to create a current twist on mid century modern...so I'm curious...what exactly about the design creates the "twist" and how is that different the other mid century modern inspired homes on AT? Thanks in advance for answers and thoughts on the matter.
PS twist or not it's still a beautiful home!
interesting, beautiful, peaceful and crispy clean place!
While this home is certainly one of the finest examples of carefully curated mid-century design I cannot help but think about the rare budget that created it.
The details alone are staggering: $600 blender, $4000 fridge, $8000 stove, original platner table, arc lamp, eames lounge chair, the amazing artwork...on and on...
Its definitely inspirational, but an immensely expensive inspiration.
Hopefully the spirit of great design for "real" people and "real" living spaces continues on this site.
In the entry and kitchen, you didn't mention the floor lamp and the white stove.
LOVE all the artwork.
Love it. I especially love the facebook skype youtube artwork. Are these posters or original art?
Super cute house, LOVE ALL OF IT!!!
Think hubby is pretty cute too. :)
Really though...DREAM HOUSE. LOVE!
LOVE your home!
My favorite accessory is your little dog. I think my pup, Astro, might be your dog's long lost brother!
They look so much alike...I had to share a photo!
http://s43.photobucket.com/albums/e353/are1980/Astro%20Pup/
Love that white swiveling Star Trek-style armchair.
Beautiful! Where is the rug in the bathroom from? The gray and white geometric patten, I must have it!!
AMAZING. I had to post that. I aspire.
My absolute favorite so far!!! Great job!
I'm a big fan of mid-century, so I couldn't wait to see this house -love it!!! Besides the cute doggys, my personal favorites are the chairs around the dining room & kitchen tables -because they're REAL chairs!!! Don't give me that hard wood so-called farmhouse craptastic 'style'. These definitely have style AND support - you can sit and linger (can you tell what I do at my table and chairs?! I would love these because I can do that :) )
The house is quite intriguing!
But I wonder, in particular about the honeycomb mirror?
Are there two?
Or did the photographer move things around during the shoot.
If so, this is unfortunate. We really arent getting a real look at the inside of this home, we're getting an edited version.
If there are two identical mirrors, I think
it's a shame that they weren't used together or as one gigantic feature somewhere!
Thankfully! as is not always the case, money and taste go hand-in-hand here.
It's not (all) my taste overall, but I think the house itself is super.
*APPLAUSE*!!! Love this home and love the decor they have carefully chosen. For such a gem of a midcentury modern, it would be easy to do 'all the usual suspects' (Eames chairs galore). Instead, they chose a nice, eclectic sampling and combined it all with lovely, diverse textures on the walls and floors. Love!
i have a similar mirror to the one in photo 12. they stated it came from a yard sale. curious (since she's an interior designer and all), if she had more info on the source?
i've never seen anything similar until this tour.
thanks again for SUCH sweet comments. i love you all!
here are some answers to questions:
@ Some Girl With a .Com: pico is a chihuahua / dachshund/terrier mix. there are a lot of these kinds of awesome dogs stuck in shelters right now, unfortunately. if you are in the la area, i volunteer for a dog rescue organization, and would be happy to facilitate an adoption!
@ brooklynbeetle: the bedspread is from fold bedding: http://foldbedding.com
the company is run by some really really nice people.
@ccatx : there are lots of similar paintings on ebay if you do a search for “mid century paintings”...good luck!
@ Danny & Carlos : i got the planter years ago from EQ3. i believe they have since gone out of business, unfortunately. perhaps a challenging diy project for you?
@ swtvi65: the gold mirror above the bed is from pottery barn from a few years back
@maurício : not sure what floor lamp you are referring to? the stove is a viking.
@86753oh9 : the ‘social media’ art are posters. not sure of the source, unfortunately. they were a (very great) gift.
@ AmandARose@: our dogs are definitely related!
@ aharris92: the bathroom rug is from jonathan adler...they have tons of colors & patterns to choose from.
@ fourandtwenty : they are indeed 2 mirrors of the same style, from pottery barn. loved them too much to pass up. i assure you, this is how my house looks...but usually a tad more messy!
@ aprilheartsaaron: i scored the mirror from a yard sale in santa monica about 8 years ago. i paid $5 for it. sorry i can’t provide any more info about them. wish i had 10 more!
What an enviable home. Everything's appealing but these really standout:
1) Beautiful family (bipeds and quadrupeds)
2) The sunlight. (*sigh*)
3) Art everywhere, low and high. I'm nuts about this photograph in the bathroom. Is the bathroom art framed/matted in a different way to protect against extra moisture?
4) The cinderblock garden is astonishing and something I'm determined to try next spring.
5) The mix of materials in the kitchen.
6) This ipe/sunbrella-covered outdoor sofa. As a dog owner, I'm asking myself, "Why aren't I using Sunbrella material inside?
Amazing place, wish it was mine. I loved the pics of you guys.
Love it! Where did you find those vintage Facebook, Twitter etc posters?
Love your house, i have a ton of artwork and you have helped inspire me to to showcase it, just trying to afford the framing which can cost more, but your place is gorgeous.
where is that bedspread from its tan, with the cross pillow on it?? very stylish
yay rescue dogs!
Very thoughtful home, full of heart and art. I am in love with all the rooms. All the considered parts are so beautiful and integrate into an amazing whole.
The ottoman, pillow and wave picture - brilliant.
A family room and living room that are both artful (with furniture and placement) and comfortable - brilliant.
And it feels odd to say, but the best uses for Flor squares I've ever seen.
And, for me, I thought it still had a minimalist vibe, even considering all the "decorative objects". It's my inspiration for the day.
I also visit this site daily and have never commented on a house tour - yours warrants priase! Truly impeccable taste.
I am crazy for that black and white photo in the bathroom. Where can I find it?
Very chic!
Crisp photography which brings out the best in this house! Love the green chairs. Need a dacshund to join the family!
Cool Paul
Your home is perfection! Are the floors in the dining room, kitchen, etc. Terrazzo tile?
This house is truly a masterpiece. It is unique! Very detailed, different from anything seen. I have been debating about buying the Egg Chair in white (I like neutral and modern, not boring) or in a color that will pop in the room and this house tour just inspired me to go white on the Egg Chair... Thanks to this lovely couple for showing their house and being an inspiration to other.
@ Tania @ chiquiita.blogspot.com: thanks for such kind words. made my day, and its only 9:30am!
its sooo funny that you mention the white egg chair, because i just picked up some fabric samples so i can reupholster! just getting tired of the slight yellow tinge to the white.
The bedroom- Ooooooh! I love the mirror and the cover....sigh....did I tell you loved the mirror?
I meant to say, did I tell you I loved the mirror...Ugh...the grammer...sorry, I was too excited about the cover on the bed and the mirror..LOL!
hi! any source for the ortalion posters? thanks!
WOW!
Late to the game but does anyone know the source of the kitchen cabinets? They're beautiful!
