What I Love About My Small Home:

My husband and I met in college where we secretly shared a single, twin-bed dorm room for three years. Moving into a studio and upgrading to a ‘full’ bed made us feel like we had all the space in the world! I have enjoyed the creative and organizational challenges of living in a small space, while still making it feel welcoming and comfortable. We love entertaining in our small space because guests always comment on how cozy and relaxing it feels. I love all the natural light we get, the pleasing color palette and all the personalized touches that really make it feel like our own. Plus, our home only takes about an hour to clean from top to bottom! It’s the perfect size for the two of us.

What I Love About My Small Home:

First, I love that I have a view of the city, and that my corner lets in plenty of sky. It's especially dramatic at dusk, when the changing color and light bring a feeling of serenity inside. Second, I adore the kitchen. It's tiny and old, so it's bare-bones, but still easy to cook in. Luckily it has a dining area, and the walls hold some favorite stuff. Third, I have a large entry hall for a place this size. I used to think I should put it to some clever alternative use--only nothing but the hall-as-hall ever worked, and now I see its point and enjoy it. Fourth, I like the bedroom for its difference from the rest of the place. I wanted it to suggest, not with objects but with texture and color, that the ocean is nearby.

 Last night I was lucky enough to attend a remarkable event — a warm, festive, stimulating gathering in which a family opened their home to over 60 people, some friends, some friends-of-friends, and some several more steps removed (like me). The friend I went with said something like, "With everything going on in the world, this openness and trust is all the more amazing. And encouraging."
