Is it possible to find a laundry hamper that's cheap, sturdy, and so stylish that it makes you feel like Jean Seberg in 1960s Paris? No, it isn't. That's why you'll have to make your own. This vintage inspired design cost around $20 to make and is perfect for holding all your Breton stripe shirts.
Materials:
wood circle
galvanized steel wire fencing
casters
screws and washers
optional: wood stain or paint, polyurethane
(Note: I purchased my 15" wood round at Lowes for around 7 bucks. If you can't find a wood circle at your local home improvement store, Waddell Manufacturing sells a similar round wood tabletop on Amazon. The fencing comes in various length rolls but generally works out to about a dollar a linear foot.)
Instructions:
1. Stain or paint your wood circle. Seal with a coat of polyurethane.
2. Lay the circle on the floor. Unroll the fencing and wrap around the wood circle. With wire cutters, snip up the length of the fencing. Leave enough overlap so that you can securely twist the wire around the opposite edge of the fencing.
3. With pliers, twist each piece of wire around the opposite edge of the fencing. Work your way all the way up the height of the hamper to make a tight seam. Be sure to trim any excess and clamp it down really well so you don't have sharp, snaggy edges.
4. Lay the hamper on its side so you can see the bottom. Snip the wires to form little squares like in picture 5. Bend the squares under the bottom of the wood circle.
5. Drive a small screw and washer inside the squares into the wood. You don't have to screw down each square. Five or six screws total will hold it together well.
6. Add casters.
7. You're done! You can throw in a canvas laundry bag or, if you sew, stitch one up yourself. I made one out of navy striped ticking.

Commercial Flour Sa...
Wow, very nice! Good job Katie!
Great idea and execution.
I've been looking forever for a set of laundry hampers for my tiny closet...
I'm going to take this idea and make a rectangular basket to exact dimensions!
love the industrial look but especially love the w h e e l s ....
I am definitely making this! And we have the majority of the supplies already... scrap wood for base, wire fencing, polyurethane, stain and maybe even the casters. This is the perfect solution for the "hamper" that our boys keep collapsing. I am going to try making a rectangular one with two sections. whites and darks Thank you for the inspiration! I can send you a picture once its completed if you like... :)
It will take a lot more than a hamper to make me feel like Jean Seberg, but this is a great design. Thanks
not sure how a hamper of any sort could make one feel like Jean Seberg. a stripey shirt and short haircut might more likely to work.
I think I will see a lot of these around in the near future because I will be making them for everyone I know! Thanks for sharing this great idea.
Love the wheels! It's a great project I might even consider doing...
As an aside though- since when did AT become a diy site?
This is so beautiful and what a nice project! Will share with a very crafty client on our next session. We're redoing her laundry area. So sweet!
Jean Seberg just called. She wants her hamper back.
(Great job!)
Oh I just love this. Thanks so much for posting. Those in the stores and online are just too expensive and this one looks just as good if not better!
how incredible clever!
Well Done! Love it. Will make a little one for the kitchen garbage I think.
I made a similar project last summer, using heavier wire and no wheels. I filled it with beach rocks and used it for a table base on my deck...
or, if your are really lazy you can use a king sized pillow case.
This is awesome. Sturdy and attractive hampers are so hard to find (for the price I'm willing to pay...).
I like this one from the Container Store:

@omoriala
That containerstore hamper seems to be the same as the industrial mesh hamper cb2 sold a little while ago (except not white)... cb2's was also priced at $50, though I got mine on sale.
One of the best DIY projects I've seen in a long time!
What a creative idea! Hampers always seem to be uber ugly or crazy expensive, so this is a great solution. Filing away for future reference . . .
Genius.
Oh wow, what a great DIY!
You could also make square boxes to hold stuff....
These would be great for recycling as well, in the kitchen.
Excellent idea. Dig.
awesome idea... thank you for sharing!
Great Idea! You can also use a plant stand with casters as the base.
love this! I think I'll make two little ones for my recycling in the kitchen
This is great - love it! More interesting, quality DIY posts like this please!
I lived in Paris (the real on) for a year, I never saw one like that vintage or new! Most people had Ikea. But that said great job all the same, you should sell them on-line. That is; make a kit that is easier to assemble.
Just what I need! Thanks!
