Name: Rachel Pally (the designer) & Kevin Circosta (the musician)
Location: Los Feliz - Los Angeles, California
Size: 2500 square feet
Years lived in: 7 years
Rachel and Kevin's love story is right out of a movie. They met in preschool, lost contact after high school, and reconnected again after college and fell in love. Their parents are close friends and both families have similar values. Right before I arrived, Rachel had whipped together the most amazing apple cobbler with fresh apples. Kevin had soul music playing on the record player. I immediately felt at home and didn't want to leave.

When Rachel and Kevin gave me the tour, it was obvious that their home was filled with love and personal treasures. They both beamed with excitement to show me their artwork and explain the personal meaning behind each piece; many from family members. Kevin talked about how they are newlyweds and Rachel added that they are nesting.
When the sun came out we headed out to the backyard for a picnic with Sadie (the dog), while Kevin serenaded Rachel on the guitar. Is this normal weekend activity? Rachel loves to pick up fresh fruit and veggies from the Farmers Market, so weekend picnics in the backyard happen pretty often. Rachel and Kevin - you are unbearably cute and are right out of a classic love story!

Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: Our style is an eclectic mix - a little Moroccan, a little Mid-Century, a little contemporary, a little Native American, a little Spanish....
Inspiration: Our home is an old Hollywood 1920's Spanish house. We have tried to stay true to the original aesthetic while adding our own personal twist. We are inspired by our travels and love to bring home treasures from around the globe. Our aim is to blend style, comfort, and functionality.
Favorite Element: We have the most gorgeous view of downtown Los Angeles - it was definitely a selling point when we were buying the house! Also, most of the houses in our view are Spanish, which makes it feel like we aren't in the heart of Los Angeles! From the side windows we can also see the coast (on a clear day)! We get amazing natural light from all of the big windows. We love our music/reading nook - it's so nice to curl up on the cushions and look out at the view while reading a book or playing the guitar. Our garden is another favorite element; there is nothing better than walking to the backyard to pick fresh vegetables out of the garden for your dinner!
Our house is in the Franklin Hills section of Los Feliz - it's the perfect combination of nature and city. We are minutes from Griffith Park where we hike with our dog, Sadie, and go for bike rides through the hills, but we are also minutes from Hollywood and Downtown. We love our neighborhood and our neighbors!
Biggest Challenge: Finding a place for everything! And carving out closet space for Kevin - Rachel is a self-admitted closet hog!
What Friends Say: We love having our friends over for dinners and parties. Everyone feels comfortable and at home. The house has a great indoor/outdoor flow and multiple gathering areas which makes it ideal for entertaining. Our friends love that our home is a gathering place!
Biggest Embarrassment:
Rachel: I'm a designer and my wardrobe lives on rolling racks!
Kevin: Because of the big windows, I feel like the whole neighborhood sees us naked!
Proudest DIY: Our backyard! The backyard was a sloped grassy hill and we designed a layout for a more functional space. We leveled the patio and used recycled materials to build the walkway and our raised vegetable garden beds. We love the outdoor living space that it created and love having our friends over for a bonfire! Since it's generally nice all year round in Los Angeles, it was important to us to have a comfortable space to spend time outside.
We love our vegetable garden - it's an amazing experience to plant something, watch it grow, and then harvest it. Our winter garden is full of greens - chard, kale, lettuces, snap peas, celery, onions, and chilis. In the summer we grow heirloom tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplant, peppers, squash, and herbs. We get to enjoy our bounty every day!
Biggest Indulgence: The house itself! And our art collection.
Best Advice: A house should feel like a home, not like a gallery. Not everything we love has to be on display. Sometimes less is more! (advice from Kevin to Rachel)
Dream Sources: The world! We love picking up pieces on our travels from Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Greece, Guatemala, Morocco, Kenya, and Mexico. We love shopping at the Rose Bowl Flea Market for vintage pieces. Also, we've been able to collect some amazing things from our grandparents. We are lucky to have a family full of artists, so our dream source is often family! We also love ABC Carpet & Home and Lawson-Fenning for special pieces and inspiration.

Marcia Prentice, please don't ever leave AT! Your tours are always the best. As a born and bred New Englander, you always have me contemplating a west coast move.
Thank you Jessicamc! What a sweet comment. I really enjoy meeting new people and touring their homes, so I am glad you love the tours as much as I do.
The house is beautiful! And that really is smart what they did with the back yard.
Oh wow! I love Rachel Pally's dresses. Her house is fantastic, too! The pup is extra cute. :)
This house is fantastic! You two have designed your home perfectly to let the architectural features shine. I love the light fixture over the dining room table and your outdoor space is to die for. Thanks for sharing!
where are those lovely bath towels from??!!!
What a lovely home. I particularly like the kitchen. There's nothing like a clean, bright white kitchen that gets fabulous sunshine during the day like that.
I have to admit Spanish LA bungalow architecture is one of my favorite home styles of all time and I sometimes get frustrated when people try to re-do or cover up the beautiful details (those arched triptych windows are so great) but in this tour, they did the opposite. They seem true to their own style while working with the house itself. And adorable doggie!
I love Rachel Pally's dresses!!! This is such a great tour, wonderfully photographed...such a nice and welcoming home :)
Lol, I'm not alone in my love for Rachel Pally's dresses! This was a great house tour, and I have to echo what was mentioned earlier about this particular AT writer/photographer - your tours are the bomb! :-)
Love the window seat and the vintage ceramic vases.
good stuff! and yes, bath towels...where are they from?
Lovely home. When people bring home furniture/treasures from their travels, how do they bring it home. Do most people just ship them home? We are seasoned travelers, and we find it hard bringing home anything with luggage restrictions and hassle going through security.
Thank you for all the nice comments!! The bath towels are available at : http://www.pendleton-usa.com/category/Home-Blankets/BATH-TOWELS/1691/pc/1816.uts
Love it! Wonderful, super cool home. My wooden fence is in dire need of replacement (okay maybe just "placement," as most of it is gone) and I am bookmarking yours as inspiration!
Oh, it's so dreamy. And one of my favorite LA neighborhoods!
Those 1920s Spanish-style houses are so evocative, and Rachel and Kevin's pared back, organic style suits the architecture very well. It's a lovely home.
great home....LOVE seeing Kim McCarty's painting - i love her work....cozy, beautiful Loz Feliz home.....makes me miss LA (a little).

what a gorgeous couple! and great job on the garden!!
this house is gorgeous- but in the future I would like to see more poor peoples houses and apartments. thanks.
What a lovely, serene home!
Agreed JodieAnn. Also, it seems like every third house tour is in Loz Feliz, LA. It's repetitive to see a specific neighborhood in a given city way-over-represented as compared to all the other areas of the country.
Here to agree with JodieAnn.
Hi, Rachel & Kevin -
I really like your kitchen. Nothing's better to cook in than a clean, white space. Also love the dog.
Question: where is the bookcase/shelving unit from in pic #14?
Thanks for opening your house for the tour.
Gimme. And leave the dog.
I love this so much I've been making weird noises to myself every time I click on a new picture. :p It's so serene & light-filled and warm and lovely. I want it allllll. I love the yard!
Absolutely perfect! This might be my favorite EVER!
What kind of floors do you have in your kitchen? I don't think you can see them in any of the pictures.
Love the round art piece (painting? Mixed media?) over the living room fireplace. Who's the artist? Beautiful home.
I love this house. It feels young and fresh and inviting and invested in, and yet, it has a finished feel to it too... finished in that it feels complete as it is. Love lives there.
Rachel, no embarrassment needed! You are very fortunate to even have a room where you can put in rolling rods to house and play with your wardrobe, a lot of us don't!
Thank you so much for your nice comments!
BRUINTOO - We always pack an empty duffel bag or two in our suitcases when we travel. That way we can pick up treasures along the way. Its a pain to carry them around while you travel but well worth it when you get home! We've never bought large pieces of furniture, though...
J5835 - the bookcase is from Room and Board. I bought it years ago so I'm not sure if they still have it. I love that its backless so it maintains an open feel and allows us to show off our books and art. Glad you like it!
MANDRE1108 - The floors in the kitchen are original hardwood. The entire upstairs has the same flooring. We stained them dark - I love the contrast of the dark wood floors and the white walls.
ARTJUNK - The round pink piece over the fireplace is by Marc Pally. It is one of my favorite elements of our house. I never get tired of looking at it! There is so much depth and detail. Its made of layers of wood and plaster and graphite and paint. I'm glad you like it!

Magical! Congratulations on such a beautiful home. I love how white and bright and inviting it is. Great couple too!
I love everything about this post: the love story and family continuity; the vintage pottery, the kitchen to die for, the rugs and last but not least the art. Beautiful beautiful beautiful !!!!
And that they eat off grid to boot. Big ups all around. I think that there's a balance on at with low mid and high end postings. My opinion obviously
I've also had much success bringing back art and artifacts from international and USA travel. It can be a hassle but the empty duffel bag approach works big time
where did you get the custom table made?
Lovely house and couple. Very envious about the garden and those frocks.
What a beautiful couple they make! They have a lovely home that looks so inviting. It has that unmistakable California vibe. I love the contrast of the dark hardwood floors against the white walls. The details throughout are great. They also have lovely dog and she has Rachel Pally dresses! It doesn't get better than this. Best wishes to them.
I was having a rather dull day and BAM I was suddenly transported...I love your home. Not too much just enough.
Thank You
Very nice.
Your window seat made me smile. You guys got style. Love all of the light, music, and plants. Really cute couple too. :)
Great kitchen. What kind of countertops?
Can I please move in? Beautiful home! I wish I could have a garden all year -- Minnesota winters just do not allow. Love all the vintage pottery vases is different colors. And of course Sadie is a cuite!
Great house, so well put together, I'm jealous! I also would love to know about the custom table. I live nearby and am looking for a table just like that.
Unfortunately, we purchased the custom table from the previous homeowner. I'm sorry I don't have a reference to give!
I LOVE this house! It looks very comfortable, stylish and functional. Reading through the comments it looks like I am not alone in my opinion. @very artsmart I am totally confused by your comment. In my opinion this house looks totally pulled together and absolutely qualifies to be on this site, that must be why it is receiving so much great feedback and why AT decided to cover it in the first place. I am also not sure what "fluffing up" even means. Also, I noticed that in the description it says that Rachel is a designer and her sense of design and balance definitely speaks to me and my taste, but maybe that's just me. Out of curiosity, I checked in on some of the other houses you have critiqued and liked....and with all do respect to those other people's homes, I am a bit baffled by what you consider to be "designed" or what "qualifies" to be on this blog. But, we are all entitled to our own opinions and in this day in age everyone has the right an opportunity to feel like they are a design critic.
@beth dooher- ditto, ditto, ditto
what type of house plants do you have in your house?
We have a couple of dracenas and a couple of Mother in Law's Tongues (sansevieria). We also have some small succulents that we planted in vintage pots and have on our kitchen windowsill. Its so nice to have greenery in the house!
Truly beautiful home you have there.. well thought out and modern but still inviting. I have kind of a random question, where did you get your tea kettle?
I am wearing RP right now, the Aurora and sneaking a AT break at work and look what I find! Gorgeous house Rachel and Kevin! I am gagging over the art pieces and the cozy nook. Also happy to see you too have rolling racks!! There is something to be said for a white house, the stories you can tell with just some color here and there. Thanks for sharing and hopefully see you at your warehouse sale next weekend!
Wow, what an awesome home! One of my favorite tours ever. I think you've really captured the romantic essence of Los Angeles/California (or at least it creates a sense of nostalgia for me) in a wonderful way. Looking at this really makes me want to move back! You guys definitely have an eye for great style. Thank you for sharing!
I'm speechless. Your home is breathtaking! And makes me miss California so much it brings tears to my eyes. Enjoy your beautiful space.
Gorgeous house. One more question... is the LR sofa vintage or new? Have been searching for something similar.
@TML the couch is from Room and Board.
I love the rich colors in the two bedrooms. Can you tell me what they are? Great use of textiles too. Thanks for the post!
Thanks! They are custom mixed paints from Portola Paints and Glazes. Check them out, they can do anything :
http://www.portolapaints.com/
Love the paint color in the main bedroom but, is it brown or another color? I can't tell. I've been thinking of painting my apartment for some time and I love looking around on AP seeing how others use color. I'm so bad at it.
Love the photography too. Great pics. Love your dog too and I happen to - once again - love that area of LA. I don't live far from Franklin Hills and pass over the bridge to go to yoga in Silverlake regularly while always ponding a move to that area. Lovely home guys!
Good grief. Talk about being hit in the face with style! Beautiful home, beautiful couple.
