Age: 6 years
Location: New Jersey
Room size: 14′ x 13′

Recently, we featured a fabulous white nursery designed for Sebastian, the young son of one of the founders of Sissy + Marley, a boutique baby planner and design service firm. And now, they’re back with a fantastic tour of a bedroom that they designed for their little six-year-old client, Ava. The room mixes bohemian chic with girly pink for startlingly beautiful results.

The team at Sissy + Marley provides several levels of design service. For Ava’s family, they offered their “Instantly Chic” package, aimed at clients who have good DIY skills and don’t need full design execution. Sissy + Marley creates a design scheme and finds fantastic elements, and then they put it all into a “room in a box” package that includes a custom inspiration board, floor plan, and a resource list.

Ava’s room combines seemingly disparate motifs—bright pink, Moroccan themes, birds—into a modern, global, and welcoming room.

We asked Chelsea, one of the owners of Sissy + Marley, about the process of designing Ava’s special space.

How would you describe the look and feel of this room?
Bohemian chic: a trip to Marrakech.

What is your favorite piece or element? What is Ava’s favorite piece?
Our favorite piece is the Madeline Weinrib Brooke Rug in hot pink. We feel like it really tells the story of the room. Ava’s favorite pieces are the Tamar Mogendorff bird houses above her bed.

What was the biggest challenge decorating this room?
Pleasing our little client. It was important that we listened to what Ava’s dream space looked like and delivered. We can confirm: Ava is a happy camper.

You seem to have several diverse themes going that all work well together: birds, pink, and a kind of global, Indian-influenced aesthetic. Did you start with one idea and add the others, or did you always know you had to mix several concepts together?
Our signature look is definitely a little bohemian chic. We love poufs, cotton dhurrie rugs, Moroccan prints and textiles, and handmade pieces mixed with modern traditional furniture. Together the two worlds always seem to mix well for us.

Do you have any advice for parents creating a room for a young girl?
Yes! Let your children be a part of the design process. It is important that you are creating a space filled with all of the things they love.
