Name: Sam Spencer and Dominic Williamson
Location: Phinney Ridge — Seattle, Washington
Size: 2000 sq feet
Years lived in: 8.5 years
Sam, Dominic and their two little girls live on a sunny hill in the neighborhood of Phinney Ridge in Seattle. The house stands out on the street as a sweet, contemporary haven with subtle storybook details. Their bright, red, front door and modern, silver house numbers are just a preview of the chic decor inside.
The house itself has gone through an extensive renovation, all headed up by Dominic and Sam themselves (evidenced by their extensive list of appliance resources below). When the couple bought the house, they got to work on a remodeling overhaul, changing up the floor plan and adding subtle luxuries like remote control skylights and a secluded backyard paradise. Definitely make sure to watch this great video which details the house's evolution from start to finish.
In terms of decorating, the interior of the home is just as warm and congenial as the Spencer/Williamson family. It is obvious that each piece of furniture or accent is deliberately displayed because of its sentiment or beauty, and is important to the family's story. I was astounded to find out that most of my favorite pieces in the home were collected at garage sales throughout the years. That, paired with the calming paint colors, contemporary pieces and bright, sunny windows gives the house an easygoing and happy atmosphere. I want to live in this house when I grow up!
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: Juxtaposition of eclectic old and clean modern.
Inspiration: Weathered, found items and daylight.
Favorite Element: The old, leather medicine ball, or photo wall.
Biggest Challenge: Encompassing kids 'stuff' with the aesthetic.
What do friends say? "I love your house, where do you get all those lovely things?"
Biggest Embarrassment: washing dishes in the bathtub for 2 months during a lengthy kitchen remodel. Or breaking my finger by falling from a dump truck.
Proudest DIY: We chose the house for its room layout and location. When we moved into the house it was run down, very outdated and quite shocking - Sam didn't even venture upstairs for the first 6 months as it was so dingy. It has evolved over 8 years and has transformed into a place that we love to come home to!
Biggest Indulgence: The remote controlled skylight, or upstairs bathtub.
Best Advice: Take your time, collect stuff over the years and rotate things, change stuff around. Fortunately Sam and I have very similar taste which really helps the decision making process.
Dream Sources: Anthropologie's displays - so creative! And British Magazine Living ect. BRILLIANT!!

I LOVE Phinney Ridge - and I LOVE this house!! It feels lived in and I am sure the children enjoy how fun it is. I'm glad so many people are "rescuing" treasures from yard sales, vintage shops, and CL so they have a second life in a family home.
great tour
It's perfection. I don't mean this in a bad way at all -- there's just enough clutter, so much personality, and it doesn't look staged at all. I love everything about this home, not to mention, it's located in one my favorite cities. Such a lovely family home -- great job!
p.s. We have that same little red car and Roddy right in our LR. They are such classic toys and fun to look at too!
Gorgeous! I love that although I recognize (and own) a lot of the same West Elm/Ikea/Anthorpologie items, it doesn't at all feel like my home, or the many other homes that probably contain the same items. The home looks so personal and, as aptlove mentioned, not staged. Very well done!
Love this house. So many fabulous elements.
I love it!
Holy smokes! One of the best tours I've seen on AT!
Okay, I'm going to ask. Where's the TV? And can we get a floor plan? In what I thought was the living room, there are doors in the right side of the photo... so no TV there, I suppose...then in another photo, there's a couch peeking from the left side, but again, no TV. Do you not have a TV or are you very creative about hiding it?
This house is chock-full of interesting stuff. In fact, everything seems to be calling for my attention with equal intensity so that I don't know where to focus. (Though this may be a function of how the place was photographed....) The living room, especially, feels crowded & could use some editing.
I've enjoyed many a warm welcome in Sam & Dom's house on Phinney Ridge, and I'd have to say the photos honor the place admirably, and capture the beauty of what's on the walls as well as who lives within the walls of this joyful home.
This is one of the best house tours I've seen. I love the juxtaposition of traditional and modern pieces. Fantastic!
Gorgeous!
Source for the deer?
Love that big yellow T and the 4 little colourful portraits. What exactly is the cabinet with all the letters/numbers (pic#39)?
Little house, huge character. It is difficult to create a perfect composition using tiny elements from different eras and styles. Great photography too. I see how I could incorporate your tiny pieces inside of my huge spaces: www.interiordesignarts.com
As another lucky guest of Sam and Dom, I must say that this is a beautiful and completely accurate representation of their lovely home. Warm family, cozy home and lots of kitties!
Ha! Great video and great home!
And the television is across from that gray-blue sofa in the first picture.
Also, the Tracy Melton Etsy link appears to be broken. Love those logs!
To die for! I heart
-The bed under the skylights
-The bathroom, esp. the tub and the artwork over the toilet
-The giant (cruelty free!) animal heads
-The photos behind the couch
Lovly.
Lovely
Fixed that link Tracy Melton, thanks for the heads up!
very nice home. they should be proud. But what i am most excited about, is to see that these Phinney Ridge folks have made it all the way down to Gather in Columbia City for some lovely shopping. cheers.
Bravo to this couple for their cobbling together of garage sale items and eclectic finds into a warm, stunning home. Love the use of grays and other darks. Beautiful!!
First of all, as always, YAY SEATTLE!
Second of all, I think my best friends probably live a few blocks away from this house.
Third of all, beautiful!! What a wonderful and warm place. And I love the photos of the back yard as well.
It is going to be crowded when we all show up with our suitcases. Quite a beautiful home and a pleasure to look at.
I loved this. Even their address is perfect!
Washing dishes in the sink was embarrassing?
I do love the decor here. As someone else noted, it doesn't look staged at all. This is the type of house I hope to have in the future.
It was actually meant to be 'washing dishes in the bath' - sorry, typo.
The deer head is from here: http://www.iloveuma.com/carvedwooddeerhead.aspx
Love. The whole thing.
And I'm obsessed with:
1. The Calypso pouf.
2. The black bathroom with the double sink and glass tiles.
This was an awesome house tour.
Well, not really a double sink, but two sinks.
What a lovely home! Thank you for the wonderful inspiration - I especially like the rhino head and think I'll ask the hubby to sculpt me one...
Can anyone source the glass dome/cloche things on the sideboard in the dining room? (#12) I can't seem to find a great selection of sizes and shapes... then again, I don't know what they're called so I can't effectively search for them! Thank you!
One word: Awesome!!!! (every bit of it).
Lots of groovy stuff in a verrrry grrrroovy house.
Thanks!!!
What a beautiful home! Love the artwork throughout the house.
Ah, I still dream of the day I'd live on Phinney. I miss Seattle so much. What an absolutely lovely home. What is the brand/name of that delicious grey paint in the living room?
Love the sleek study corner. Just put together very tastefully. That chair is mine!
Wonderful! So many sweet details.
Love the small dress paintings and your ginger cat!
Very nice...you seem to have mastered maximizing every space available
to me, this is the perfect home. in danish, we would call it "hyggeligt." beautiful, unstuffy, cozy, full of curiosities, bright and fun. i love it.
One of the most "real" AT house tours; it is interesting and still savvy. Love it.
I love the use of the space for the office. What kind of wood is that used for the desk?
There is so much comfort and style packed in this home... I can hardly stand it! :)
lovely. can you supply paint colors, esp. the grey in the living room?
beautiful home, and such a nice sunny seattle day for the photo shoot!
I would also love to know the paint colors, esp gray in LR and the yellow in kitchen.
+ the skylights
+ the bathrooms
A great tour - beautiful home
What a lovely home! I get inspired by almost every picture. Thank you so much for sharing.
Very nice house. I think those dress pictures are my friend Liz Tran's. They look great. Here's her web site: http://liztran.com/home.html
They are indeed Liz Tran...if I could I would have her work hanging in EVER room.... magical and beautiful.
Really love the gray living room. Lovely home.
We have the same Rody Horse. Truth be told, it freaks me out sometime as his eyes seem to follow you around... Love your home!
Lovely house - I especially love the starry night art above the tub. And the little office is a fantastic use of space!
yeah, phinney ridge (we live around the corner from these guys)! love what they've done — such warm, comfortable, and interesting spaces and items. this tour is both aspirational and achievable — and I appreciate seeing that combo.
Kyliecooney, check it out — kids spaces are on the included video link.
What's the address? I'm moving in! The house is amazing. Now am I the only one to notice that the hubby is a total hottie? ;)
another vote for floorplan! esp the attic/master. Your house looks JUST like ours but i keep playing with our attic layout... ours is all raw space at the moment.
Someone posted about GATHER in Columbia city....brilliant shop, wonderful and interesting home accessories and clothes...worth stopping by for a look! http://www.gatherconsignment.com/
Wonderful house! I feel so at home just looking at the photos
great space planning inspiration. doesn't seem like there is any wasted space anywhere. well done!
I'm envious of the fab red coral lamp. Very nice and comfortable bungalow anyone would be proud to live in. Kudos!
what a wonderful home, i am so in love with their office!
Love the rhino head- I think this is my favorite faux safari animal head ever- so cute and humble looking.
Very happy feeling in every space- thanks for sharing! It really feels like a fun home.
the rhino head is brilliant...and the use of space is charming. i just would remove the stag head (one faux taxidermy head is enough).
This, my friends, is how it's done. It's absolutely superb.
There are too many awesome things to mention, but I'll single out the pebble stacks in the bathroom, the half drop-sided table, the big yellow T, and the use of scrubbed wood throughout the house.
Even though it has tons of interesting, eye-catching stuff everywhere, this is one of the most CALMING house tours I've seen in a while. It just looks so serene. Must be from the combo of great color choices and marvelous Seattle light. :)
Thank you all for the lovely comments. It's been such fun "showing off" our house. We will put the paint colors on for you shortly. I just wanted to post the artist who painted the beautiful portraits in the bathroom is Lee Larson www.LarsonGallery.com....enjoy!
This is definately one of my favourite homes, it's warm and inviting with many lovely treasures.
WHAT PAINT COLOR IS USED IN THE LIVING ROOM!? I have been trying to find the right shade of gray. I love this house!
Gorgeous! Not every element is my taste, although many definitely are, but it's all lovely and adds up to a warm and inviting home.
I am not fond of taxidermy real or not, but I did enjoy the home, it is quite lovely.
What a charming home. I'm in Seattle, too, over in Ballard. I was wondering about the little house in photo 45. Is this a playhouse for your children? Did someone build it for you, or is it prefab? Details please! Thanks
Dana, it's a kit, comes flat-packed and isn't difficult to put together, (although the roofing was laborious).
http://cottagekits.com/phouses/diy/vp_diy.html 8'x8', The kids love it!
My whole family loves our lime green Rody Horse. We are not going to outgrow that toy! Thanks for sharing your great home. Seattle is wonderful and we look forward to moving back to the PNW! (But I shouldn't write that for fear everyone will move there) er.....I meant to say that it rains all the time!!
Such a melodious, eccentric, stylish home! I love it. I'm not surprised to see Living etc is a source of inspiration for them as this house has a very quirky British feel to it as well. I'm going to examine this one closely for a few days as it's so good it's almost overwhelming. Not everything is totallly to my taste but it's all perfect! xx
omgoodness this has to be one of my favorite apartment therapy house tours!
Job well done =)
Ruben M.
Love the use made of the window nook.
The animal heads are a bad gesture, regardless of them being fake. Pays homage to something sick and creepy. It should also be noted that when people actually did this, it was typically as a means for the hunter himself to display "trophies"--not as something you (someone with no connection to the killing) would acquire and use as a decoration, even further commodifying the creature (if that's in fact possible). Clearly you have no connection to this, and yet you still want to pay homage to the act of putting the preserved decapitated heads of other creatures up as a proud display? Petty, revolting and despicable. Might want to actually think about the ethics of what you're doing, and what it says, rather than just whether something happens to "look cool" or not. It's really shallow and unjustifiable to do otherwise.
If you actually admire the creature and you want to convey that, then use a statue of image of *the whole, living creature*--not a mounted head in the style to unmistakably mimic the practice of killing animals as trophies and displaying their dead bodies.
Before someone goes there, you can't equate this to a human bust either: This practice never derived from the use of *actual preserved human heads* but always existed *only* as a truncated form of a statue to pay homage to a revered figure or work of art. Conversely The form of these animal heads is clearly and unmistakably derived from a practice very different.
I’m sorry you have chosen to interpret the faux animal heads as paying homage to hunting, my interpretation was the opposite, mocking hunting and traditions while displaying creativity and architectural texture. If I wanted to pay homage to hunting surely I would have real animal heads?
Paint Colors
Trim throughout the house - Benjamin Moore: Linen White
Front door –Weatherall: Ox Red
Kitchen – Sherwin-Williams: 129 Optimistic Yellow SW 6900
Living room – Behr: Ashwood 720D-4
Stairwell – Benjamin Moore: Eggshell (color name not finish) 2026-70
Upstairs bathroom – Benjamin Moore: Old Prairie 2143-50
Upstairs bedroom - Behr: Ashwood 720D-4
It seems unusual to use the interior, private areas of one's own home to mock things they don't agree with. For example I wouldn't put up an image of Sarah Palin doing something absurd on my wall, which I'd then have to live with and be reminded of the irritating person every day in my personal space. Seems very negative and gratuitous. To each his own however. I think the truth is probably that you simply liked the look of them and didn't give it much thought beyond that... But that's just my subjective analysis. Anyway, the office nook is great.
I used to be a sculpture back in the 90's and was floored by the quality of the trophy wall mounts. Thanks for the great photos...it's inspired me.
You know what's "petty, revolting, and despicable?" Complaining about cardboard animal heads on a design blog comments section.
This house is perfect. I particularly love the armchair in the bedroom.
Love the roll arm restoration hardware couch. What color velvet is that? It seems to change in different lights.
Also, how dare you use those paper animal sculptures to pay homage to deforestation?! Think of all the endangered rhinoceros trees that had to die to make that paper! We can never replant those trees...
:P
I love how creatively family photos are displayed throughout your home, especially over the sofa. It was very refreshing and inspiring to see that (kinda rare here on A.T.).
P.S.- Don't worry- I don't think kopanko will be back for a while. (busy trying to turn soapbox into a window nook)
The beautiful tree ring art in the bathroom are by Tracy Melton, and you can buy his art on ETSY http://www.etsy.com/shop/focuslineart?ref=seller_info
You have done a beautiful job with your home. I have a similar house just north of Phinney on the cusp of Greenwood that I've rented out for many years while I live in NY. I have been daydreaming of moving back to Seattle and tailoring the home to my tastes, including adding a deck and renovating the upstairs into a master suite such as yours. The skylights, the master bath and the landscaping are just incredible. Two questions: I'm curious where the closet is located in your bedroom and if you could recommend and share the contractor you used.
