The IKEA Rast dresser seems to be the DIYer's favorite project. And why not? At $30 a pop, the Rast is a small investment that, as you can see in the gallery of images, can be dressed up in an endless array of ways…
• By removing a drawer, Laura from Rambling Along transform the dresser into a night stand. The gray and white treatment, along with the addition of the yellow floral print paper, is oh-so-modern. (There's even a bird on it!) Via Hodge Podge
• Bri from Me, You and a Weiner gave her Rast dresser a high style makeover. Painted a gorgeous shade of blue (who doesn't love blue?!), Bri turned up the style dial with the addition of Gold Greek keys and trim.
• Speaking of gold, we blogged about Nancy's Dorothy Draper-inspired Rast makeover earlier this year. With some paint and stencil, Nancy was able to knock off a vintage piece she had long admired.
• The Swedish furniture maker has even gotten in on the Rast hacking fun. As seen on the IKEA blog, this dresser has been dressed up with a faux bois print. And, in place of handles, cut outs were introduced to the drawer fronts.
• The flip side of IKEA's funky faux bois treatment, A Charming Nest converted their Rast into a very traditional look. The addition of trim to the base and drawers, plus some white paint and contrasting top, make the Rast look like a whole new piece of furniture altogether!
• Naomi at Design Manifest gave her Rasts an Asian inspired update. The finished pieces look like high end Asian chests.
• Changing up the Rast is nothing new. We noted Kate's Ikea Rast Dresser Hack almost two years ago. And we still love the two tone look.

Sprout Side Table
Wow. Great post! Wish I had time to try a couple of these.
These are fantastic. One of the more inspiring DIY posts recently.
I have four Rast dressers in my craft room

I totally got on the Rast hack bandwagon myself!

I've been considering it but it's kinda small. I need a dresser for my closet and wanted something just a smidgen bigger.
@sarahkenobi - I love what you did with it! I recently bought that fabric to redo my living room. The walls are painted a similar color too!
There is this company that sells already made overlays for the rast dresser.

neat. i didn't know these were a thing. i think i might want to replace a bed-side table with one of these eventually.
@krgr1428 thank you! I have them stacked on top of each other too, I have four (and fabric bursting out of them!!!)
and I am so excited someone else shares my love of color :D when I had it mixed at the hardware store the guy was all "are you sure???"
LOVE the Rast dresser! There are just soooo many amazing designs out there lately... I just need to think of a place I need one! :)
Shelli at A' La Mode just posted about hers today!
I want to see more home hacks!
Thanks for my blog shout out but you failed to add my Rast to the pack:

@JNY - Thanks for the link. I didn't know these existed.
*cough*cough* Totally forgot ours.

totally doing this for bedside tables
excellent post, am amazed by the huge range of effects you can get on a simple dresser
Here is my hack. http://www.flickr.com/photos/mnerd/4452760421/
I have since updated the handles and it looks a million times better.
I would like to set the record straight here...the 2-tone Rast Hack was thought up by a guy named Eric. It was featured on Design Sponge a full 2 months before anyone else featured it on their blog.
Why do I care you may ask? I hate when people take credit for something they did not come up with...don't we all.
Hence I don't read a certain popular blog (*cough*cough*) cause they have been taking credit it for a couple of years. Even going so far as to have the stolen idea named after them, and getting indignant if they don't get the credit. Shame on them.
This is great! We have been looking for a dresser that will fit between two doorways in our bedroom. I think this might actually work. And with some paint and a little hardware changeout, how can you beat $30??
I am definitely doing dorothy draper-inspired night stands for my new home!
Love! <333
I love hacking! It makes the pieces look original and unique.
I did a rast hack. Nothing exciting, painted it white, stained the outside a deep brown, replaced the drawer pulls. And while it was a fun transformation to do, I'm not happy about the depth of the dresser though. We've been using them as bedside tables for about 2 years now and I really wish I had some more room on the top! (Baby monitor + lamp + alarm clock + iPad + books = no more room!)
oh, buddy! LOVE hacking! these are so inspiring!
I just revamped my new Rast dresser (and an Ingo table). I opted to stay conservative as I am a klutz when it comes to actually handling tools and paint brushes.

its really hard to believe that photo number 5 (by: A charming Nest) is still the same dresser....? I cant see how adding trim made this look the way it does. I would love to see a 'how-to' on this piece. Its phenomenal the difference!
Sarekenobi..
Your's is by far the best! Love it!
love the woodgroove one
Thank you so much for featuring my rast hack!
@queenyellowsun...please head over to my blog and I give a how to on the piece!

wow! thanks @AnastasiaBeaverhausen
I bought this dresser for my front hall to store shoes! I didnt install the top drawer, but instead bracketed the top front to the 2nd drawer so it can hold tall boots. I also painting it grey and installed metal hardware- it was awesome AND cheap!!
The only issue is I have giant size 10 feet so the drawers are a little too shallow and the shoes have to sit on an angle to fit :)
