This month we've been focusing on how to make your outdoor space look and function best for your family. If you're in need of a super cheap outdoor rug fix, we've got a solution for you. This bright and cheery burlap rug is easy to make and cost us less than $15!
• acrylic paint
• painters tape or stencils
• clear acrylic caulk
Spread out your burlap (fabric.com has an awesome selection of colors) and decide how you'd like to decorate it. You can use stencils, tape off stripes with painters tape, or freehand it. We laid out some paper squares to try to get the spacing right.
Paint your design with outdoor quality acrylic paint and a paintbrush. Be sure to spread plastic or papers under your burlap because the paint will ooze through the fabric. Let the paint dry completely.
On the back of the rug, squirt a bead of caulk around the perimeter and work your way around adding smaller concentric rectangles toward the center. The caulk will keep the edges from unraveling and will give the rug more body in general. We used one 10 oz tube, but you could use additional tubes if you'd really like to bulk it up. Make sure you use clear caulk so it doesn't show from the front. Let the caulk completely cure from white to translucent before turning it over.
You're finished! Well done. Enjoy your outdoor space!
