Name: Stephen "Scuba" Clark
Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Size: 1,700 square feet
Years lived in: 5 years; Owned
Stephen 'Scuba' Clark bought his house five years ago, and in that five years, not a month has gone by that he hasn't managed to add significant and beautiful upgrades to his home. All of the projects are custom, designed by Scuba, and typically built by his roommate, Jeremy. Scuba's passion for life and travel is obvious in every corner of his home.
Stephen moved to Phoenix from New York City 10 years ago, and he absolutely loves it. "In ten years I've watched it change so much. It's great. Every year it gets better. Not one thing takes a step back." The friends he's made since moving to Phoenix are the biggest factor is his happiness here. It's clear he's crafted his home not just for his joy, but that of everyone who comes through the front door. "I don't have a key to my house. Everyone has a key but me. Everyone has the alarm code, the garage code. They come in and out and I like it that way."
He shares his house with his boyfriend Billy and close friend Jeremy. Jeremy lives rent free in exchange for his craftsmanship. If a project goes over the cost of rent, Scuba then pays Jeremy the difference. It's a symbiotic relationship that speaks volumes of their ingenuity and spirit during difficult economic times. While searching for a cost-effective way of creating the closet in his master bedroom, Scuba looked at big box stores for shelving units, but knew there had to be a cheaper, more attractive way. He designed the shelving, bought the materials, then handed everything over to Jeremy. His resourcefulness is motivating and infectious — with the excess materials from the closet, they made the side tables in the living room. The furniture that hasn't been hand crafted is typically purchased at GoodWill or thrift stores. Scuba takes great pride in how inexpensively he's creating his dream home, and he should. The brief time I spent in his home left me giddy with inspiration for my own.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
My Style: Homely-Mid-Century-Random-Comfy.
Inspiration: My friends and my travels. All of my friends have great style and
uniqueness, and I learn from each one of them. Every project in the house, like the
leather kitchen pulls, was done with the help of friends. For the kitchen pulls I had 8
friends come over and help me make them. I'm also very fortunate to be able
to travel overseas at least 3 times a year. Each new place I go I always find something that I incorporate into the house.
Favorite Element: My bathroom door. I found it at a junk store and refurbished it for my bathroom door. I sanded it, frosted the glass, added brass hardware, and then painted the house number, 1844, on the door. Everything made in the house I've stamped the house numbers onto, so if I ever move I will remember it came from this house.
Biggest Challenge: The house was built in 1955 — that's pretty old for Phoenix, and my bathroom was unbelievably small. The original shower was so small if you dropped anything in it you would have to get out of the shower to pick it up. I combined the bathroom with the master closet and washer and drier room from
what was the back porch to make a master bathroom/laundry room/closet all in one.
What Friends Say: It's always clean and feels comfortable. My aspirations are that my home is always warm and inviting for anyone who walks in the front door… except for a robber of course.
Biggest Embarrassment: The TV room. The ceiling is so low. It used to be the back porch and to raise the roof cost way too much, so I just enclosed it and made a living room.
Proudest DIY: As simple as it may be, painting the entire interior of the house was the proudest moment. It was my first project and took me a whole week to finish, working every night after work. This is my first home I purchased by myself, and the feeling of finishing that first project was unexplainable and amazing.
Biggest Indulgence: My backyard. Living in Phoenix, we have amazing weather
throughout the year, and I wanted a living space outside. I saved for four years to complete it, and it was worth every penny.
Best Advice: Do whatever makes you happy and don't be afraid of change. Even if you end up changing the paint color 2 or 3 times until you find that one color that makes you smile.
Dream Sources: Thrifting and international flea markets.

Sheex Bedding
It's just perfect!
Good Job!
m.
The outside space is my favorite and definitely worth 4 years of saving!
Can just imagine relaxing with a cold drink and book in the summer, and then in the evenings having friends round for a bbq and a few glasses of wine.
One day!!!
We need to talk about those metal cubbies in the bathroom. Where did you get it? I need it. I suspect it's vintage, so I'm sad that I probably won't be able to find one.
I love it. This is the feeling I want to have in my apartment. Hard to put a name to it, but this is something special.
I'm loving the metal cubbies in the bathroom and the outdoor space! Great job!
yeah, great job boys... What came to mind is "money can't buy taste"... it might take longer when we can't throw money at it, but, slow and steady works for me just fine...
Yes yes! Cubbies in the bathroom--need to know where you got those!! Love them! Actually, love the whole house!
And I DON'T think you should feel embarassed about the TV room--that was one of my favorite rooms...just looked so cozy--definitely a place where I'd want to curl up and watch a good movie!
Sundance, Viva Terra, and I believe even Pottery Barn all have metal cubbies somewhat like the ones pictured.
Wow, well done Scuba!
http://www.vivaterra.com/furniture/storage/modular-wire-shelving-14087.html
I'd love to see a "how to" on that bathroom door on the tracks!
That outdoor area is drool worthy. As are those wood floors. But I'm curious (genuinely so), why only one rug in the home? I don't mean that as a criticism, but I'm rug person. My toes need rugs and I couldn't help wishing for one in the living room and one in the TV room while viewing the tour photos. This is, of course, for me when I move in! ;)
I think it is wonderful that you exchange craftsmanship for rent with Jeremy. Friendships like yours are pure treasures.
Beautiful home - thank you for sharing.
Finally, a home that doesn't look staged or "curated". Very very nice.
I really like those barstools with the white tops and wooden legs. Where are they from?
to die for, I love every square inch!
I have the same coffee table with the woven drawer. Did you refinish it? I'm wondering how to tackle the project.
Thanks!
Love the living room shot, great photography.
I also enjoyed your Erik Buck stools and Adrian Pearsall coffee table.
The tension pole light is a nice touch in the bedroom.
I don't know why I like this -- I just do!
Now THIS is how a Home Tour should be done. Beautiful photographs of a wonderful home...
Love the masculinity of the home. The sliding bathroom door is TO DIE FOR. Fantastic, unique space. Great job, Scuba!
Fantastic! Great home. I LOVE your outdoor area!
I really love your house!!! I love everything about it...the only thing i wish you'd change is those dining chairs but that's probably because they are not my style.
Beautiful! I love the Danish Modern and industrial elements throughout the house. And the leather straps as cabinet handles are such an awesome idea!
@MaryE. If you live in Phoenix you don't need rugs for warmth. Other possible reasons for not having rugs - pets with problems, personal preference, hatred of vacuuming...
I have no carpeting and just a few throw rugs because I'm asthmatic. Throw rugs can be thrown in the wash. You can only clean a carpet so much but it still keeps in the dirt.
Every single thing about this house is just gorgeous. I live in Montana, where it snows 7 months a year, and am sick with envy over that outdoor living space. :)
Where is the metal shelf/cubby unit in the bathroom from? I've been looking for something exactly like that!
Loooving it. So serene and flowy - in a tempered and masculine way. I really want to lounge and have cocktails in that lovely space outside. Thanks for sharing.
I'd also love to know where the stools at the breakfast bar and are from and what the living room paint color is.
Just perfectly masculine, cool, and elegant
Inventive - great house!
It's from Viva Terra. Look at moke076's link earlier.
The black doors are so striking. I'm thinking of painting my interior doors black, and I love to see examples. Every time I do, I'm more inspired.
This is absolutely one of my favorite house tours I've ever seen. Everyone's already said it but I'll echo -- those bathroom cubbies! Love it! And the backyard patio is to die for. This home is just bursting with personal touches and definitely gave me more than a few ideas for my dream house.
Wow what an outside space! That being said, I think the seating areas could use some area rugs to pull the pieces together.
Cool house!
Where did the wire piece in the bathroom come from?! I love it.
Perfection!
This might just be my favorite house tour ever. I love everything about this house. If it were mine, I'd add some brightly colored art but that's just me. I also love it the way it is.
Big LOVE! Beautiful home.
I wish the tv room was my biggest embarassment!
Wow, this makes me want to move out to the desert. Also - I would love to have a roommate that will barter rent for carpentry!
Seriously, do people not read? WIRE PIECE FROM THE BATHROOM is from Viva Terra, like moke078 posted.
Pom pom
http://www.vivaterra.com/three-bin-wire-shelf-unit.html vivaterra for this one.
These were my parents. They bought a lot of furniture in the classifieds vs. new. I remember getting them from the classifieds when I lived in Tulsa Oklahoma back in the 80's.
We haven't refinished it yet but I do want to in the near future.
I agree with you. These were a quick cheap fix. I got each chair for $10 and I'm waiting to find the right ones. We went thrifting this past weekend and still no luck... one day the right chairs will pop up. I will keep these in the garage since they fold up.
stools parents and the color is sherman williams mega greige 7031 any paint store can match it for you.
Oh how I love this house!!
WOW!
Terrific outdoor space. I also like that you have a space for socializing that ISN'T the TV room. Having both options is really a good idea. So about those keys you're giving out...
One of my absolute favorite tours of all time!
iuxta... let me know if you're ever in phx. all good people welcome.
Oh man, LOVE this.
I'm having a hard time picking the area I like the most, but the outdoors is awesome.
It takes strong vision to make toilet paper look sexy. ;)
The best tour I've ever seen on here. Exactly what I've been trying to achieve. I love mid century modern, but have also found a vintage bed on CL for $50 bucks I could pass up. And I've got it paired with the exact...I mean exact... persian rug I found at an estate sale. I want to bring a lot of style elements together. Couldn't quite put together a mid century bathroom either and ended up with something like you have. Did you make the linen shower curtain? Seriously, best tour I've seen on here ever. Time, patience, design, having to redo things, having to save for things, having to think it out instead of just being able to walk into a store and buy it all...it's what everyone needs to learn about design. Congratulations.
sorry, "couldn't" pass up.
And yes, love the barstools as well. The legs look like Adrian Pearsall's dining table. Perfect.
I'm in the midst of buying a house in Phoenix and this is just the motivation I needed. I absolutely adore Scuba's style, mid-century is definitely a favorite of mine. I absolutely cannot wait to start styling my new home when it's purchased, but I'm afraid I don't have a personal Jeremy for the craftsmanship. Guess I better start getting more creative with thrifting!
portlandrules... I didn't make the shower curtain but it was what I wanted and tool a long time to find. Thanks for the nice words!
Really nice work Scuba!
And Pi,thanks for keeping the comment section folks in line.
I love that 1955 is old in Pheonix. Last night I met a guy who lives in a house built in 1752.
Great iron bed. It combined with the dining room chairs reminds me of boys sleep over camp.
Wow, this is such a wonderful home! I feel happy and hopeful after reading about your way of life -- obviously filled with love and kindness. You've also inspired me to put some leather pulls on the cabinets in my rental kitchen!
So lovely! So much room to breathe. So calm. So beautiful. I agree with the many of the other posters - one of the best tours I've seen.
Wow.
This has to be one of my favorite house tours yet. Simply sublime. Those floors look amazing!
My heart went pitter-patter when I saw this tour- one of the best I've seen on Apartment Therapy in a long time. Is this home in the Arcadia neighborhood? So cool- I just love it. The outdoor space is amazing- of course- please tell me you have a pool!
And don't be embarrassed about your low ceilings- I have an MCM in N. Phoenix and we all have to deal with that (I'm 5'8" and I can touch my office ceiling with my fingertips). :) Thanks for sharing your home with all of us- it truly is lovely.
this house is a treasure.
the photography is amazing.
divine
Just gorgeous.Too many favorite parts to name!
I think it's my favorite ever.
Oy! Vivaterra is selling this wire bathroom cubbies for $130. I snagged the exact same ones at HomeSense for $30 just a couple if months ago.
Wow. The craftsmanship of every detail in this house is astounding. I bookmarked this as my dream house! Great job!! I thought I had seen every fantastic angle, room until the last few slides that outdoor space is awe inspiring!! This is the coolest house ever.
I love your "But I'm Happy Because I'm with You"- a heartfelt sentiment that fits your warm personality. I would have to disagree though with your assessment that Phoenix has only moved forward; AZ is a very conservative state that is openly hostile to not only the LGBT community but the Latino as well. I'm glad you've made friends & like it there but doesn't living in such an environment bother you? I guess I'd rather live in a small place in a progressive community which considers me an equal citizen than not. I'm curious if others feel the same or am I just a crunchy leftist?
Love,love,love!!!
A fascinating house tour. Photos far above the average on AT! I dislike almost every single object in the place but together, it all works!
I am loving the painting in the living room...showing the horse cart in it. It is so lovely. I live in Pakistan, so I am quite familiar with this kind of traditional art. Thanks for sharing.
Brilliant - One of my favorite tours this year.
Love it. Had to finally leave a comment on this site that I have been religiously following but never felt compelled to comment (besides out loud to myself) BUT this place is...my words won't do it justice...so beautiful. It's the craftwork and simplicity. I see nothing wrong with that TV room. A place to blob!
Stunning.
great wood and leather chair in LR. Where did you get it? Do you know the designer? I got a quite similar one at GW, my favorite place to shop.
This house is perfection! The little side table with the cut out for magazines is genius!
What a great house..if the living space with the slated ceiling is the biggest embarrassment...I just don't see why it would be...I assume the biggest embarrassment was never photographed since every pic here is fabulous....the only fear I have is the house only has one bathroom...after growing up with 8 siblings with one bathroom...I can't deal...
Beautiful home, especially envious of that outdoor space! The only thing I would do different is perhaps add some rugs here and there, but otherwise, your home is perfection.
Hey Bison -
I appreciate your thoughtful response. One of the aspects of doing home tours for AT that has me incredibly excited is showing people that there is a HUGE community of progressive, open minded, and just generally lovely people in Phoenix. Phoenix is a huge place, but there are substantial pockets of 'crunchy leftists' everywhere. I realize it's not as dramatic as in Tucson of Flagstaff (both hugely liberal), but we're here and we love it. I think you'll find that quite a few of the bigoted people here aren't actually Arizona natives, but transplants from all over the country. Both central and downtown Phoenix are constantly moving forward with local businesses, music and art, and community activism.
Well done all around! Where are the barstools from?
hey ikayn888 -
i'm a phoenix native (now living in LA) and this post made me so proud. the comment above made my heart smile. big love to you and keep on doing what you are doing!
I am absolutely in love with this house. IN LOVE. It is a perfect balance of old and new and you should be so very proud of this home. Please please please post a tutorial or even a comment on how you did the bathroom door. Even just where you got the hardware to hang it. Thanks so much!
Wow. I really, really love this. So stylish and beautiful, and has such a warm, inviting feel to it. Don't know if this makes sense, but this home seems like it really has soul. I think a space achieves that feeling when it evolves over time, and is filled with pieces that you love and/or made yourself. Exactly how a home should be.
Well done, Scuba! Thanks so much for sharing your beautiful home with us! You seem very happy in your life and your space, and that really shows here.
So happy to see your beautiful home on apartment therapy! The back yard looks amazing! Great job!
I love this place. Great job. The leather drawer pulls are so cool and clever.
So beautiful. It's obvious how much thought and care went into this home.
Great job at creating a unique home with character and warmth, something I find hard to find in Phoenix! It is just beautiful I love your outdoor area!
Beautiful. And thank you, AT, for finally giving us some wide shots so we can see what the place really looks like, not just endless closeups of soap dishes and knick-knacks.
That's good to know! I often wonder how difficult it is to live where you're a minority that is unprotected by state law & where the political climate is downright hostile. I'm sure there are lots of lovely people in Phoenix & I'm glad you're sticking together!
It looks great, I like the salvaged door on the track. I'm designing my apartment as we speak, and I have sourced thrift shops n Craigslist fir all but one piece. The search is great, and saving money doesn't hurt either :) enjoy your space
I fee like these are the tours that AT was made for.
Beautiful home!!
I love, love, love this house!!!!
I love this ! I just copied your bathroom photos in my "house ideas" folder ! I have the same layout and was thinking of putting metro white tiles like this ! Nice work !
I go the track at barn door hardware, you can google it and find them. I just reused left over stain. Found a local printer that had frosted vinyl decal and cut that to size. Spray painted the numbers on with a stencil and got the brass hardware from an ace store. You will need help from someone who is handy with mounting things to find studs and drill the holes. Sorry for the slow response. I'm traveling in Kathmandu Nepal right now and the internet is shotty. Follow me if you're on instagram CLARKINC All the nice comments on here are so sweet. Thanks everyone!
And THIS is how you do it. There's so much love and creativity and resourcefulness in this home. Is everything precious and perfect? No. Is it pretentious and designed to impress? Not at all. But every inch is thoughtfully executed and reveals much about the residents.
To me this is what AT is all about...not showy McMansions or bazillionaires' custom-everything penthouses in NYC.
Having grown up in Phoenix (I just typed those words - a personal triumph) I'm fairly certain this is the. nicest. house. anywhere. Wow.
Yes, McMansions can be gross. They can also be indicative of the evolution of a neighborhood. Who knows other than to say "That one's nice, that's gross ..."
As for custom-everything penthouses ... c'mon .. if you were a bazillionaire wouldn't you fly Jeremy to you and have him go nuts? C'mon ... :)
Love your home! Scuba, this is wonderful. I'm a fellow "Phoenician," and I love it when people in Phoenix do MCM. Phoenix, after all, didn't boom until the post-war period, so we have an abundance of fun mid-century properties. Someday I hope to buy one myself. Much better than the beige and stucco McMansions that are the norm these days.
And Bison65, we are not all right wing crazies! Phoenix gets it's share of bad press, much of it probably deserved. The only way to change that is to act from within...if enough kind, sane people live here and make their presence known we will change Phoenix. We are getting more urban, arty, foodie, and LGBT friendly every day. I could just move away to a more "liberal" city like Portland or even Tucson and curse the good ol' boy Phoenix culture from afar, or I can stay and dilute the crazy. I'm staying.
What a great home!
Love this house!!!!
The outdoor area has me shaking with excitement. Just beautiful.
This is what AT house tours should look like.
Absolutely wonderful. I'm inspired :)
LOL. So you saw the Fuchs' NY penthouse eh?
It's wonderful. Beautiful, so well designed. The outdoor space, I think, may be the best I've ever seen. A 10.
Phoenix is a hard place to live if you don't love it, and I definitely didn't love it when I lived there. There was nothing aesthetically pleasing, as far as I was concerned - just mile after mile of block walls and pseudo-Spanish McMansions. Obviously I was hanging around with the wrong people! This home is wonderful. Well done, Scuba! Your resourcefulness is an inspiration.
I love this house so much! It's masculine enough without being all 'dudebro', but I could also see myself living there. It looks so clean and comfortable, and all that wood brings a wonderful warmth to the place. The outdoor space is fabulous.
And props to the house tour photographer, for really showing us the house instead of close-ups of a bunch of little mincy bits of things sitting around on stacked books.
Gorgeous! Strong work! I also love that sliding door... giving me a great idea for my sadly door-less master bath. :)
A fellow Phoenician
I love, love, love everything about your house! Nice work.
He has the Lane Perception Coffee Table by Warren Church!
One of the most gorgeous pieces Lane made...and about $1800 now. Lucky.
