Despite its not-so-green car culture, Los Angeles is a hub for innovative retailers who are improving the eco-conscious options available to consumers. Apartment Therapy has profiled a few of the city's independent green retailers, from a unique paint store that specializes in non-toxic finishes, to a showroom for modern clay-fired ceramics made in Southern California, to boutiques that carry one of a kind reclaimed furnishings.

Atwater Village

• Jill's Paint: This neighborhood paint store has expanded in recent years into a comprehensive eco depot. The selection includes unique brands like Yolo Colorhouse paints, Anna Sova Food Paints, and Mythic Paint, as well as green building materials for renovators. They also have a wine bar, where you can take a mini-break from home improvement.
• Pot-ted: Located on Los Feliz Boulevard, Pot-ted is a comprehensive source for garden supplies, containers, and reclaimed vintage furniture for the patio. They also sell water features, fountains, and bird baths.
• Atwater Village Farmers Market: A small market with 12 farmers and 7 food vendors, it's open year-round and serves the nearby neighborhoods of Silverlake, Los Feliz, Glendale and Glassell Park. Open Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm at 3250 Glendale Blvd.

Silver Lake

• Kellygreen Home: Kelly Van Patter, owner, describes the store experience as a "green lifestyle boutique." Kellygreen Home focuses on unique recycled and recyclable products, from furniture to home accessories to tabletop items.
• Driftwood: David Browne, owner of Driftwood, concentrates his inventory on custom furniture and vintage pieces. His line of handcrafted furniture includes dining tables, coffee tables, chairs, and bookcases made from reclaimed timber.

Hollywood and West Hollywood

• The Visionary - An Eco Boutique: Located on Melrose, just down the street from the Pacific Design Center, this store was started by Magda Rod, who began with the eco-fashion label Visionary by Wildchild Wear and then expanded to offer a selection of green home accessories, fine art, baby items, toys, cleaning products, books and gifts.
• Heath Ceramics: Heath Ceramics has a 5,000 square foot showroom in Los Angeles, where they sell their clay-fired ceramic tableware, which is made not too far away in their Sausalito Factory. The showroom also includes a studio and gallery that focuses on ceramic research and small run, custom work.
• Hollywood Farmers Market: Located at Ivar and Selma Avenue, it's open on Sundays from 8 am to 1 pm. This open air market has over 90 farmers, 30 local artisans, and 30 bakers. Free special events regularly include chef's demos and cookbook signings.

Santa Monica

• The Green Life: Owner Scott O’Brien created the Green Life to be a one-stop home store for organic and/or eco-friendly cleaning products, home accessories, and "lifestyle" goods. Beyond the brick-and-mortar store, they've got an extensive online inventory worth checking out.
• Co-Opportunity Organic Grocers: Established in 1974, this co-op is run by a group of members who stock "one of the largest, freshest selections of certified organic produce." They also have extensive selections for vegetarians, vegans, and people on gluten-free diets.
• Santa Monica Farmers Market: Santa Monica hosts four farmers markets: Wednesday and Saturday markets are held from 8:30 am to 1 pm at Arizona Avenue and 2nd Street. Another Saturday market is at 2200 Virginia Ave from 8:00 am to 1 pm, and Sunday markets are at 2640 Main Street from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm.

Valley Village

• Green and Greener: Alegre Ramos, LEED AP and Allied Member ASID, is the owner of Green and Greener, a lifestyle boutique that sells clothes as well as organic and sustainably manufactured products for the bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen.

Venice

• Mash Studios: This Venice store is the first brick and mortar outpost of MASH Studios, designers of the well-known LAX line of furniture. They use CARB compliant wood paneling, low-VOC finishes, no-formaldehyde glues, and they design and fabricate their products in California.
