One of the most popular kids' room tours this past year was this shared room, designed on a budget by Marian Anderson of the Bumper Crop. Marian and her husband built their own beds and creatively reused other off-the-shelf items with stunning results. Although you might be thinking it takes a super-skilled designer/decorator to pull off a look like this, Marian's resource list (compiled here) proves that anyone with the time and basic skills can make it work.

Hanging Beds: Instructions from Ana White

• Ana White: Marian and her husband built the three hanging beds using plans for a DIY Hanging Daybed adapted from Ana White's blog. The step-by-step instructions explain how to construct the platforms from 2x4s. Marian used lag bolts to safely mount the beds to wall studs.

Paint Color: Behr

• Behr Paint: The wall color is Behr's 790F-4 Creek Bend, a warm gray with brown undertones. For other neutral wall color recommendations from Apartment Therapy readers, see this post, or for more "true grays," see this post.

Bedding: IKEA Textiles

• IKEA: A favorite source for kid's bedding, IKEA shows up as a consistent source listed in nursery tours. It comes in lots of colors and patterns, and it's inexpensive, so you don't have to worry about kids getting it dirty. Shown: Vilmie Rund Throw, $13.

Artwork: Kideko

• Kideko: The color scheme for the room came from a yellow poster Marian purchased through Kideko, whose webshop is a great resource for bright, inexpensive artwork for nurseries and kids' rooms. Shown: Sunshine Poster, $12.

Accessories: Target

• Target: Another good "big box" resource for kids' rooms, Target carries budget-friendly wall clocks, frames, toy bins, bedding, and organizational supplies. The Retro Metal Wall Clock - Silvertone ($35) has a brushed metal frame that goes with just about any modern or contemporary decor.

Ladder: Custom-Made

• DoItYourself.com: When you're building your own bunk beds, you'll also have to build a custom ladder, since premade ones are usually designed specifically for commercial bunks. Here are some helpful instructions to start with: How to Build a Ladder for a Bunk Bed.

Stepstool: IKEA Bekvam

• IKEA: This stepstool is a long-time Apartment Therapy favorite. Made from solid wood, the Bekvam is inexpensive at $15, and it's easy to customize with paint. Marian updated hers with a coat of blue Rustoleum spray paint.

Wall Lights: Home Depot

• Home Depot: Marian and her husband purchased the Hampton Bay Wall-Mount Outdoor Round Bulkhead Light, $12 at Home Depot. They removed the inner fixture and replaced it with battery-operated tap lights, which don't have to be hard-wired into the wall.

Table Lamp: Lamps Plus

• LAMPS PLUS: The yellow table lamp shown in the photo above was a thrift store find, but if your luck runs thin in secondhand shops, you can find similar ones new at Lamps Plus, where you can customize shades and bases. Shown: Mimosa Ceramic Table Lamp, $210.
