A Modern Space is at the crest of the new wave of design-led furniture shops in Ottawa, ON. Owner Patrick Hajas stocks the kind of modern, iconic brands which, until recently, were hard to come by in Canada's capital. His sharp eye and edited approach is perfectly in line with the needs of the area's homeowners, but the furniture, lighting and accessories sold here are also available online, with delivery across Ontario and Quebec.

Name/Title: Patrick Hajas/Owner

Open/launch date: February 2012

Inspiration for opening: I worked in the high end furniture industry for many years and I noticed there was a lack of stores in Ottawa offering great quality original modern furniture and lighting at a more accessible price point. I also realized that square footage was becoming more of a premium for most people so we wanted to offer products that were not only of great design at a mid-price point but that could also work in smaller spaces such as condos. We also don't believe in selling reproductions of modern classics; there are plenty of really cool products available out there that just need a place to be showcased. And that's where A Modern Space comes in!

Merchandise source: We carry a select group of modern furniture companies in our Ottawa showroom like Blu Dot, Emeco, &Tradition, Bend, Fermob, RoomB, and Design House Stockholm. Rather than carrying an extensive number of product lines our approach is to have a smaller, well curated collection of original modern furniture companies so that we can showcase their products properly for our customers.

Best selling item: 1) Diplomat Sleeper Sofa by Blu Dot 2) Navy 111 Chair by Emeco 3) Mega Bulb by &Tradition

Your favorite item: I love the new Broom Chair by Emeco. The chair is made from 90% pre-consumer industrial waste, stacks, can be used indoors/outdoors and a $204.00 CDN price is extremely reasonable.
