Inspiration for opening: As odd as this sounds, I don't think there was a lot of inspiration involved in opening. While difficult at times and certainly labor intensive, the process of opening a business has felt very natural and organic to me. That said, I am inspired to continue doing what I do for a wide variety of reasons, not the least of which is aesthetic. I deal primarily in flatwoven rugs, the types of which are often woven by nomadic and semi-nomadic women. The beauty of these rugs, for me, is a result of the weaver's creative autonomy. I am deeply inspired by the creativity of so many weavers the world over. It's pretty humbling to be around all these exquisite rugs, especially as a designer.
Merchandise source: We source in Morocco, Turkey, China, Israel and Ukraine. We have rugs and textiles from Brooklyn, Peru, Mali, The Caucasus, Iran, Tunisia, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan and so on. We also manufacture new designs in India, China and create custom pieces in Nepal. We overdye rugs in NYC.
Best selling item: Every vintage piece is unique so there isn't necessarily a "best selling item", but I would say Moroccan rugs tend to do fairly well. Of my collection, "The Hamptons" design has sold out and Seek Knowledge isn't too far behind.
Your favorite item: For obvious reasons, It would have to be the cream "beni ourain" Moroccan carpet with my name woven in big, bold, black letters. Aside from the one, there are a few here that will be difficult to part with, in particular this folksy, self-portait of sorts from Peru.
Favorite store (other than your own): I love ABC Carpet and Home.
