Vanessa Barneby is a former Vogue Living Editor. Alice Gates is a painter with roots in fashion illustration. Together they are Barneby Gates, producing new takes on traditional wallpaper in their native England.
Barneby and Gates create all of their own designs and the papers are produced "at one of the few remaining print works in the Midlands using traditional printing techniques." This Other Eden, for example, was printed using the the Gravure Printing technique. "Copper printing rollers are engraved with the design, with a separate roller for each colour. The depth of the engraving determines the strength of the colour, which means that each roller is capable of printing tones of that colour. Thus, photographic levels of detail can be achieved with a wonderful 3-D effect in certain light, unlike modern digital processes which tend to look flat."
At first glance many of the designs look like standard prints. It's only upon closer inspection that you see the details that make the prints unique, such as the rabbits that create the design on Boxing Hares.
