Brimfield owner Julie Fernstrom thinks just about anything looks good upholstered in tartan and/or flannel, and she's got the skills to make it happen. Her new Andersonville shop (which opened last May) is equal parts English cottage, Mad Men, and 80s preppy.
Julie first fell in love with home furnishings and upholstery in London. After following a guy across the Atlantic, she found a way to support herself by scavenging the English and Welsh countryside for great vintage finds, which she resold at a London flea market stall.
She later returned to the U.S. and opened English Cottage (now closed) before setting up shop in Andersonville, a great neighborhood for unique furniture stores. Brimfield is (appropriately) filled to the brim with blankets, tabletop pieces, clothing, home accessories, and one-of-a-kind furniture. There's a basement level with additional stuff, including barstools, lighting, and vintage signage.
Prices are reasonable for the quality, although they're not cheap. Even if you don't have a lot to spend, we recommend stopping by the store just for the inspiring ideas—an armchair upholstered in Swiss army blankets, a library cart repurposed as a bar, and throw pillows made from flannel shirts were just a few of the smart concepts we spotted.
In addition to keeping shop, Julie offers custom upholstery services. There's currently no website for Brimfield. You have to visit in-person or call for more information.
