One of the most eye-catching booths at this year's GreenBuild, was the Native Trails display. At the show they had a gorgeous collection of reclaimed wood vanity cabinets paired with hand-hammered recycled copper vessels. We met with the founder of Native Trails, Naomi Neilson Howard, and found out some pretty cool details about the company and their beautiful fixtures. For years Native Trails founder, Naomi Neilson Howard, visited Mexico and observed the production of amazing handcrafted copper works — skills that had been passed down for centuries. She eventually decided to team up with the artisans to make functional copper fixtures, and is proud to support and promote their craftsmanship traditions in the products. “Sure, the bottom line is important, but what creates lasting value is providing a high quality, sustainable product and cultivating strong, long term relationships with our artisans and staff. “We are very close to our artisans and their families — we sponsor their soccer teams; attend their family weddings and baptisms. We also provide loans and micro-finance for capital improvements so that they can grow and prosper with us.”
In addition to having the strong connection to handmade artisanal goods, all of the materials Native Trails uses are eco-friendly. The copper is made from recycled metals (typically reclaimed conduit, pipes and wires) — available either as-is or plated with a nickel finish; the woods are either made from FSC-certified sources, or are reclaimed wood from local barns. In addition to being a beautiful, recycled and high-quality material, Naomi noted that copper is naturally an anti-bacterial material — perfectly suited for the kitchen and bath.
Native Trails makes a variety fixtures, most notably kitchen and bathroom sinks and tubs, as well as range hoods, mirrors, tissue covers and other sink accessories — in both stock and custom designs. The fixtures could easily fall into any design category and fit into any home: rustic, modern, vintage, traditional or contemporary.
