We included OnlineFabricStore in our roundup of best sources for online fabric last week based on their selection and easy site navigation. Now we've circled back to speak with Mayer, the site's founder, for this Store Profile and learned that it's actually a web offshoot of an older brick and mortar family-owned business.
Name/Title: Mayer, Founder/Owner
When did OnlineFabricStore launch? Our first iteration launched in 2006.
What was the inspiration for opening? OFS grew out of my family business with 50 years in the industry, so I have a natural passion for fabric and what it brings to people's lives. I started the web division of the company to broaden our reach. We wanted to provide customers everywhere with the highest quality products at the best possible prices. I've always had an interest in technology and this allowed me to meld the two.
Where do you source your fabrics? We source both right here in the US and internationally. Finding great products isn't hard but finding reliable suppliers can be. Over the years we've worked really hard to create good relationships with a pretty wide breadth of suppliers, so there's definitely not just one source.
What are the challenges of shipping fabric? Shipping fabric is unique from other industries because we can't just throw it in a box. We have to cut every order individually. One challenge we face in getting the fabric out the door is having appropriate continuous yardage in stock to meet an order. For example, while we may have 30 yards of a fabric in stock, it may be on multiple rolls and not one continuous piece. We always want to ship continuous yardage because we know customer projects may require it. Shipping fabric on tubes is also tricky. We're constantly assessing how to improve packaging so that each order arrives to a customer's doorstep in the same condition it left our warehouse.
What's the best selling fabric category? Décor and basics have always been our strengths. We work hard to stay on top of the latest trends in fabric, and we're proud to offer a wide selection to our customers.
Other than your own, what is your favorite store? We love Etsy.
