Ikea furniture may at one point have had a reputation for cookie-cutter sameness, but a generation of DIYers, crafters, and "Ikea hackers" have changed all that. At this point, Ikea pieces arrive like boxes of blank canvas, ready to be customized and personalized. But what about all those people who don't have the time, inclination, or hand-eye coordination to tuft a wall sconce or reupholster a planter? People without DIY skills are individuals, too. That's where Brooklyn artist Kimberly Hennessy and her +Fliffa studio come in.

+Fliffa is a Brooklyn-based studio that customizes Ikea furniture so you don't have to. It's a deceptively simple and brilliant idea. You tell them the piece you would like customized, and they go to the Brooklyn Ikea, buy it, and fix it up for you. Then they mail it to you in the original box, and you assemble it at home like any other piece of Ikea furniture, probably with a tiny Allen wrench.

+Fliffa was conceived out of a love for beautiful, simple Ikea furniture, but also a love for color, pattern, and personalization. Each piece is a unique work of art created after a conversation with you.

Clients can customize colors or motifs and add names and initials. And a customized piece of Ikea art isn't even all that expensive.

What we love about Ikea is how affordable it is, and we don't want that to be lost — so we try to keep our prices low in comparison to other custom-painted furniture companies. Many pieces end up being $100.00 or less.
