Where would we be without a little ingenuity? For one thing, we wouldn't have new products like RD Shady, a line of interchangeable lampshade covers out of Olympia, Washington. Based on the concept that it should be as easy to update a lamp as it is a throw pillow, these clever covers zip on and off in jiffy.
Name/Title: Lara Anderson, owner of Red Door Interiors LLC. In Olympia, WA and co-inventor of RD Shady interchangeable lamp shade covers.
Launch date: May of 2012 is when we first had the interchangeable lamp shades in our store. It was a two year process from idea, prototypes and sourcing to finally get this patent pending product in our store. At this time we also introduced our coordinating night lights, pillow covers and table runners.
Inspiration: As an interior designer, my passion is creating beautiful spaces and making good design accessible to everyone. In our home décor retail business we saw a need that wasn’t being met for affordable, high-quality, designer lampshades. While sourcing shades for lamps we found at estate sales, the proverbial light bulb went off that we could create interchangeable lampshades that are well-made, on trend and affordable in comparison to custom lampshades. In addition, we offer our customers the ability to customize any of our products to fit their needs.
Merchandise source: Currently we use Robert Allen fabrics and offer their line by Dwell Studios. Although the RD Shady starter kits are sourced in China, our final products are all made in the USA, specifically Portland, OR, Seattle, WA, and Olympia, WA.
Best selling item: Our best selling item is our “Divine” RD Shady . Divine is a beautiful fabric that works well with most people’s décor. Its subtle metallic pattern is lovely. That said, our night lights have become quite a hit as well in their fun colorful patterns that people love for themselves and as gifts.
Your favorite item: This is a hard question because the amount of time and thought that goes into our fabric selection is intense. I become attached to the different products as a result of this. But, the one pattern that just makes me smile and literally brightens my day is our “Glorious” RD Shady. I am amazed at the range of color present in this pattern and it can truly light up a space and bring energy to your surroundings.
Favorite store (other than your own): I love to shop home décor shops and I am always on the look out for fabulous ones to visit. But in my hometown, it would have to be Drees. It is a truly decadent shop that I aspire to be like. I am inspired by the quality of products and the elegant design throughout.
