I always feel sad when an old-school bowling alley shutters its doors. As far as spaces go, they're often so interesting. A lot of that classic character has to do with the wooden bowling lanes (well, and the jukebox, and the beer). So what happens to all that great old wood once a bowling alley closes? In this happy ending, it gets a new life as handcrafted furniture. We originally featured NYC based Counter Evolution back in 2008, and since then the company has grown in its scope while still maintaining its original mission: to craft beautiful, sustainable furniture and commercial installations using reclaimed pine wood from bowling alley lanes.

The notion of using wood from bowling alleys is novel, yet the furniture is anything but kitschy. It is crafted to last for years and I love the clean, minimal look of it.

P.S. If you live in the NYC metro area, you may very well have sat on one of their reclaimed bowling alley benches at an area Shake Shack or Starbucks. Who knew the worlds of yelling "turkey!" and "triple shot no foam soy latte!" would ever collide. I feel like there's a life lesson in there somewhere.
