When I first met Marianne and Jackie, I was contemplating buying the folding Marcel chairs in the second image above. I ended up passing on the chairs - only to see them carried out by a lucky shopper a few minutes later - but I was glad to have at least walked away having learned about The Savoy Flea.
Name/Title: Marianne de Ley & Jackie Molloy/Owners
Open Date: The Savoy Flea was created in 2011. We worked together at a property management company & realized we liked decorating the apartments with our vintage finds more than managing them. We quit our jobs. Jackie went to design school & Marianne founded The Savoy Flea in 2011. We decided to join forces in 2012 & due to demand we added vintage rentals & interior/event styling to The Savoy Flea. We also paint a lot of our pieces & do special requests.
Inspiration for opening: Dark & dreamy with a French twist. We're inspired by classic pieces that are both masculine & feminine. Think the Belle Epoque & Prohibition era with a slice of Regency. The vintage market is saturated with Mid Century Modern, Rustic & Shabby Chic. It's actually hard to find timeless pieces in one place without being stuffy or overpriced. We love what we buy & sell. It's what we would put in our own homes.
Merchandise Source: Everywhere! Estates, basements, tag sales etc. Sometimes dark & dreamy can just be dark & scary; we've had a lot of things fall on us while reaching for that amazing 1920s Bentwood. Our motto: We find the goods so you don't have to.
Best selling item: Any pieces we paint with our House French Blue & Savoy Black & bentwood pieces.
Favorite item: The Gillian Drum Table. Put it in a window with two chairs & you've created the perfect nook to read or have a cocktail. It also makes a nice bar or entry table. It's elegant, functional & dare we say, sexy.
Favorite store (other than your own): Deyrolle
in Paris. No matter how many times a person goes in there, their jaw will be sure to drop.
