Platform beds: sleek places to sleep that don't take up a lot of space, have an airy, simple sort of feel to them and don't require you to have a box spring! They also have an unexpected benefit to their simplicity: they're usually quite affordable.
Just because a platform bed is affordable and simple doesn't mean it can't be stylish or attention-grabbing. We searched for ten good-looking beds that won't break your budget but that also look great. And a bonus? Some of these even offer storage! Great for tiny spaces.

What I'd like is a simple platform bed that comes apart and stores easily that I can use with an aerobed mattress for guests.
I don't know if they exist, but I want one.
I have a full size Min bed from DWR that I absolutely love:

It lists for $800 but I bought mine at their outlet in NJ for $250. Best platform bed I have ever slept on and it does come apart rather easily.
Ok. So...I gotta ask...exactly how is *under $1000* for what is basically a bed FRAME (mattress NOT included) considered affordable for the average renter? Add a decent mattress and you could easily double the price and them some. I'd like to see a poll of average renters who will testify such a purchase would not break the budget.
Really, I just can't wrap my mind around posts such as this. Or perhaps I've totally misunderstood AT's mission statement.....my bad.
I'm Inspired! Now I have 5 or 6 ideas to BUILD a platform bed for under $100.
Yeah, I'm not sure in what sense a $900 bedframe would be considered affordable.
I bought this bed from overstock 2 years ago and it is all wood, super sturdy, nice looking, and has lasted. And a very good price - especially when you consider their shipping usually ranges between free and $2.49!

I like the drawers in the Ikea Mandel but it seems like you wouldn't be able to open the ones at the head of the bed if you had nightstands.
We have the black Mandal that we bought off CL for $100. Definitely affordable. It looks awesome but the mattress does slide a little "sometimes"..right? ;-)
I bought my dwr min twin bed (in white!) for $200 off CL. The exact thing I wanted, within maybe 3 weeks of my deciding I wanted it, even!
A minor quibble: I have yet to see how these are so much more space-saving than traditional beds. I don't think that's actually a real selling point. Like labeling OJ "low carb".
I want a king storage bed with enough drawers that we can get rid of our dressers (to make room for the king sized bed). any suggestions?
for dulcibella ~ maybe this from overstock?

I'm in love with this bed - it's available in May, and should retail for under $1000 http://www.leggett-cpu.com/product.asp?cid=3&%3Bpid=700&pid=700
In the age of bedbugs, I simply cannot fathom owning a storage bed. Or any bed without a simple metal frame. I won't even let my beds touch the walls. It's unfortunate. When I see apartments on here with nifty beds built into nooks or into lofts I just think, "what if...". Anybody who has had them will know what I'm talking about, I think.
@MIKLAKMIKLAK Ikea gets around that nightstand issue by the way the works. It's extra wide and made of wood slats. It comes with shelves that you can put at any height
@Suburban_War, ahh got it.
We have a fabulous platform bed, completely ecologically friendly and for us, very close to home. This small company is located in Sidney, British Columbia, Canada.
This bed is simple and yet so creative in its design. The couple who own this company are incredibly helpful, friendly and very eco-conscious. I can't recommend them highly enough!
Have a look at their website

We purchased the bedside tables as well.
@pegling: I've been eyeing the queen-size version of that bed. Do you have any experience with it -- or does anyone else here on AT? I like its height off the floor (not so much for storage but for kitty play area!). Thanks!
I bought a solid hardwood platform bed from a local futon shop about 10 years ago; I think I paid just under $400 for it. Love it; looks very good (simple and classic), extremely sturdy but still has an airy look to it. I'm tempted by the Calvin bed at Room and Board, but unless I get a bigger home where I can put my current bed, I'll be keeping what I've got. No way would I ever want a box springs again.
I also have a Mandal from Ikea, and I love it. I have a tiny bed room area, so having built-in, stylish storage is a major plus for me. I don't have room for nightstands, but I use one of the drawers at the head of the bed in a similar way -- tucking books, etc. in it when I'm ready to sleep. As @googerber points out, it does move "sometimes", though for me it's more of the whole bed sliding on the floor than the mattress... ;)
