The monthly club is an old-school approach to gift giving that's usually associated with fruit baskets or popcorn tins, but the Internet has advanced beyond the Harry and David catalog and into the 21st century. Subscription gifts are available now for everything from artwork to movies and, if it's what you want, you can still sign up for the scented candle of the month club, too.
- 1) 25 Colored Pencils for 25 Months. That's 500 pencils! In 500 different colors! Find it online at Social Designer, $33.
- 2) A Year of Art. Get a year's worth by signing up for an "art in a box" service. Chicago print shop Sonnenzimmer is offering 10 subscriptions slots for everything they make in 2010. (A year averages 20-30 handmade prints, $500.) Other options include the Bay Area's Compound Gallery ($360 for 1 year, requires pick-up in Oakland) or San Francisco-based The Thing Quartlerly ($200 for four artworks over 1 year, national delivery).
- 3) Wine Clubs. The Kitchn gave good reviews to Bottlenotes, which offers 9 different clubs, from seasonal offerings to dinner party wines ($245 - $1,000 for 1 year).
- 4) Fabric of the Month. MaterialGal's Etsy Shop offers a "fat quarter fabric of the month club" for quilters and sewers, $23 for 1 year.
- 5) Magazine Subscriptions. Help to save the struggling shelter mag business by purchasing a gift subscription for one of the titles that still remains: Elle Decor ($10 for 1 year), Living Etc. ($122 for 1 year, delivered from the UK), House Beautiful ($10 for 10 issues), Martha Stewart Living ($24 for 1 year), Dwell ($20 for 10 issues), Real Simple ($24 for 1 year), or Architectural Digest ($20 for 12 issues).
- 6) A Year of Flowers. Send flowers year-round with a subscription. Florists with national delivery include Calyx ($450 for 1 year), FTD's monthly flower plan ($600 for 1 year), orchid plan ($560 for 1 year), or bonsai plan ($600 for 1 year), Organic Bouquet ($500 for 1 year), or Plow and Hearth ($410 for 1 year).
- 7) CSA Box Subscriptions. CSA, which stands for Community Supported Agriculture, is a national program for consumers who want to buy directly from local farmers. Year-long subscriptions vary in price, depending on whether you purchase half or full shares. Find a CSA farm that delivers near you here.
- 8) Netflix Subscriptions. It's the ultimate movie of the month club. A basic gift membership starts at $168 for one year.
- 9) Candle Clubs. Yankee Candle will send you a new scented candle each month ($198 for 1 year). With Colonial Candle's club, you get a box of tapers every month ($312 for 1 year). If you prefer soy candles, check out Saxony Soy Candle's candle of the month club ($204 for 1 year, $16.95 monthly).
- 10) Soap of the Month Club. We found a bunch of these on Etsy, including KreatedbyKarina's scented soap of the month club ($56 for 1 year), BohemianRose's handmade soap of the month club ($70 for 1 year), and the dirtyhousewife's gift-wrapped soap of the month club ($55).

NYTimes Weekender is my default gift.
The World of Interiors has been an inspiration for my mother and me for years, and I give her a subscription every year. My husband has been receiving a beer subscription (with great glee).
And just when I was running out of gift giving ideas, Apartment Therapy lends a helping hand. Wonderful!
Real Simple, Food & Wine, and House Beautiful (among others) are on sale for $5 for a 1-yr subscription at Amazon right now.
beer of the month. My wife got it for me for an anniversary, it was fantastic. But I am a big beer guy (not a bud light guy, ha) and I brew my own.
Thanks, Carak! I just got a few presents knocked out with your tip!
(and, erm, a few things for myself.....)
I have three subscriptions on my own wish list this year: Netflix, Maghound (maghound.com, you can pick a different combination of magazines every month), and BeerAdvocate.
just took a look at the colored pencil one very cool idea. but $33 a month, for 25 colored pencils... Those are some expensive pencils. The entire set, over 20 months would cost you $660... Unless I am reading it totally wrong, but I am pretty sure that is a per month cost.
Actually, the most basic Netflix package starts at $107 per year.
Love ReadyMade too.
Am I a dork because I would love to get a soap a month?
Amazon has Real Simple magazine subscriptions for $5 right now, making it a super easy and affordable gift to give!
Yes, head on over to Amazon now! it ends today I think.
I have also gotten cheap mag subscriptions to a number of hearst magazines by entering their forever running $1,000,000 or $250,000 contest. As soon as you submit your entry there is a page with an offer for 2 (titles) of their magazines 1 for $5.00 or 2 for $10.00. The titles differ depending on which site you are on.
I thought those candles were markers! I was thinking, "Oooh, what dainty, pretty little markers" as I was searching for them.
@jmorey you're reading it wrong. It's $33 for the 20 month subscription. Seems like a good price to me.
Last year I gave my BF (who is not a fan of holiday-inspired consumeristic impulses) a "hot sauce of the month" subscription - and it was AWESOME. I got it from Amazing Clubs, but there are a couple different companies that specialize in monthly gifts.
I love the combination of Etsy and "of the month" gifts, I'm off to research that idea more thoroughly...
J. Crew is all over the subscription model this year - they offer shoes, necklaces and cashmere sweaters that way. I wish!
Also you can get a special edition headband every season from this etsy shop...
charm school design
I thought asking my mother for a New Yorker subscription last year would be a no-brainer, but she got me the Oprah magazine instead. For real. Every month I get the reminder that she thinks she knows what I want better than I do myself. Sigh.
The colored pencils are $33 per month, I just checked it out. That would get expensive!
@Tiamat_the_Red - they really are $33 a month...

About Payment
Q. When will my credit card be charged?
A. Your card will be charged at the time of shipping, generally the 10th day of each month.
Q. What if I want to stop my subscription?
A. You can stop at any time. Just contact us to cancel. We will never charge you beyond the pencils that have already been sent.
nope, pencils are $33/month (shipped from Japan!)
thanks for backing me up on that one everyone. Otherwise $33 for 500 pencils would be an amazing deal. But 33 a month is a rip off. The idea is great to have 500 different colors. but on the other hand I would rather just buy a giant set and could send them yourself each month. Kind of a DIY monthly present.
Loved the pencils but they really are $33/month for 20 months! Beautiful idea, but $660 for pencils is not worth the expense. Too bad...
I love Citizen Bean, a coffee of the month club:
http://www.citizenbean.com/
It's all independent roasters and the company has THE best customer service.
Holy shit. $660 for pencils? A person would really have to like to draw to make that worth it...
There is one mistake in the listing of the "art in a box" service from the Bay Area's Compound Gallery. It does not require pick-up in Oakland. In fact they have subscribers from all over the world. However it is more expensive than picking up from the gallery.
I'm slow on this uptake, but fair ivy is a great one. They send surprise packages monthly, full of cute handmade goodies.
