Q: I recently purchased a set of end tables (see pic) from Craigslist. I want to use them as bed tables, but need to add about 5" of height. I tried to remove the legs, but they don't screw off. I would have to saw them off to remove. Any suggestions on adding height to these tables w/o completely demolishing original piece? Thanks! Sent by Michelle

Those are lovely end tables, but there's not a thing you're going to be able to do without destroying the piece or having it look piecemeal.
If they're not the correct height for your bedside, they need to go elsewhere in your home (either side of the sofa as they were originally intended) or sold and the funds used to purchase tables that are more appropriate to your needs.
I read 5"? yes agree leave them alone and use elsewhere. Or take the box spring off the bed.
Lower the bed? Get rid of the boxspring?...
I think I'm with bepsf on this one.
I would paint them white, add new hardware and add castors.
Ditto on the casters idea. And/or maybe some little add-on "bun" feet? You might not achieve the full 5" but maybe enough to make it *work*.
Wooden finals. I would be willing yo bet you could find wooden finals close enough to 5", in a similar enough style, that you could stain or paint to match.
Nice tables, they'd be great stained darker or painted, but it's really a tall order to add 5" of height. I agree with the 'remove the boxspring' approach otherwise consider using them elsewhere or, if you split that 5", add 2-1/2" casters and add glass/plexi (with polished edges) to the top set on top of spacers (either glass, plexi or even cuts from metal conduit - those you can spray paint or polish to a high sheen or darken to look aged). That should bring you close to the 5" makeup but, unless you put something really interesting and creative under the glass/plexi, it would always look piecemeal (that may not be an issue to you in the BR).
Buy new tables.
I have seen tables that have metal legs that taper down to the foot...I wonder if you could find something like that to stick the legs into to add height.
Okay, believe it or not, doing a google search I found a website that has table legs!
You can do a search by height at their website. There you can narrow it down to 0-10 inches, and then narrow down those results for 4-5 inches or 5-6 inches
http://www.tablelegsonline.com/search/
I am assuming you'll paint them once you add any length?
I believe you can fix this with minimal effort, and still have it look cohesive. I can't tell from the photo, but are the bottom of the table legs are round? If a trip to a lumber supply store is not possible, you can add a few inches with a full-round dowel of an equal or slightly smaller circumference and it wouldn't be noticeable. Lastly, I think adding casters to the bottom would help with the height, and be very stylish.
Decide on the height you want and then float them on the wall.
Use an aluminum shelf strip and 1x2 to build out a support for the body of the piece. Repeat right under the top. Remove drawers and screw frame into the strips.
If you are paranoid, you could add one small metal leg to the front on the side closest to the bed (Ikea probably sells them and they'd be called something like 'Durka Oflam').
Why not add something or four to the top to support a piece of glass? that way you've created more surface area as well?
Stack them on top of something like a small empty shelf? That'll get them a step up and give you a little more usable space underneath, without obscuring the top. 2" or even 3" you could do with casters, but 5" is a *ahem* tall order.
Although I like the 'float them' notion, I'm against fixing in place furniture like that. Maybe because I like to redesign too often. Or because I rent and don't like damaging walls.
I would try something quirky... maybe set them on top of a vintage hardside suitcase. I also like the idea of adding spacers (dowels, finials, etc) and topping with glass or a thin board. You get the height and an extra shelf.
Also, I agree with laurion - I like the idea of floating them on the wall, but it's a pain to take down and reinstall if you want to rearrange your furnitire... trust me, I have been down that path.
I like stacking them on something strange, like a suitcase, or even just a little plywood box that you build especially for this, and paint to match your bed linens. You could make it open, if you vacuum often and need to store old magazines or something there, or closed, and it would just be a platform. Or you could paint the boxes to match the floor and hope no one notices them... depends on how eclectic your design is.
I assume they were a deal, you like them, and "get new tables" isn't an option.
everyone seems to think people on this site are rolling in cash. get yourself a deal and "make it work" as tim gun would say.
temporarily, i'd relocate some lovely fat coffee table books to lift your lamps and waters glasses.
i like the idea of putting legs upside down on top and putting a peice of glass on them. you could slide books and mags in there. oh, the storage.
these will be great with some fun paint. good luck to you.
Set them on a storage box painted to match your decor. Or on wooden wine boxes.
If you add wheels you may get really close to the 5". Just pick some up at Lowes/Home Depot
