It's the New Year, and for those of you in organizing mode, we're pulling together shopping guides to help you get your home in shape. Wall-mounted desks and shelving can be hard to come by, so for those who live in tiny apartments or have a closet-sized home office from which they work, here are some of our favorite options.
-
Resource Furniture:
New-York based Resource Furniture specializes in space-saving designs for bedrooms and home offices. Their Home Office System is housed in a 13-3/4 inch-deep cabinet. Email or call them for a price quote, but be warned — these systems start in the low thousands.
-
IKEA:
Their PS Laptop Workstation is a great budget buy at $60. Made from powdercoated steel, it has compartments for a power strip, laptop, and cell phone. Additional side compartments offer storage for keys, bills, or other small stuff.
-
Design Public:
They have a few modern wall-mounted desks, including this one by Mash Studios. Priced at $720, it's made from solid walnut with a powder-coated aluminum sliding door. At 58 inches, it's one of the longest work surfaces of the bunch.
-
CB2:
If you're looking for a vertical wall desk at a good price, try CB2's $200 Helix Wall-Mounted Desk. The design includes two shelves above the desk and a frame made from nickel-plated steel. Shelves come in ebony or oak veneers.
-
Atlas Industries:
Made from solid wood with a steel framing system, Atlas' AS 4 System is priced by customized component. Their wall-mounted desks are beautiful but expensive — expect to pay around $3,000 for a desk with shelves, more for a more complex arrangement.
-
Stacks and Stacks:
They stock a decent, basic Wall Desk by Wooden Mallet that's affordably priced at $135. It comes in a dark red mahogany or light oak finish with a laminated desk surface and a magnetic catch. Search their site for a few more basic, inexpensive options.
-
Fluke Collective:
The Waveform Shelf by John Paul Plodes is a beautiful, powder-coated steel shelf/desk that sells for $350. At 22 inches long, it's just the right size for a minimal laptop rest or bill-paying station. Unlike some of the other desks listed here, it has no built-in cord control.
-
McMaster-Carr Supply Company:
If you like the industrial look, check out catalog supply company McMaster-Carr. They have a bunch of very affordable, basic metal wall-mounted desks designed for factory offices. The Wall-Mount Desk with Drawer is the largest one, priced at $193.
-
Vitsœ:
Designed by Dieter Rams in 1960, the Vitsoe system is a classic modern design: simple, modular, and stripped of unnecessary detail. It's long-wearing, can adapt to your home as it changes, and it's expensive. Shop online or in their New York showroom.
-
Design Within Reach:
The Sticotti Shelving system, designed by architect Alejandro Sticotti, sells for $1,200 - $1,900 at Design Within Reach. Made from South American hardwoods, this is a minimal, all-wood, track-mounted desk and shelf system.
-
Urbancase:
At ICFF 2010, Urbancase debuted their new Ledge, a floating desk that can be used to house a laptop or a turntable. An integrated cord management system keeps the look streamlined. Available in red ($1,300) or walnut ($1,500) through Urbancase and other stores.
-
Container Store:
Elfa's wall-mounted desk and shelving systems continually make our "best of" lists, and right now they're on sale at the Container Store. Shown: White and Platinum Elfa Office Shelving & Desk, currently on sale for $247 (regularly $354).
