High-End Fabric Stores

Their bright, bold 1960s Finnish style is classic and instantly recognizable. You can buy Marimekko in the US through concept shops, Scandinavian stores like FinnStyle, and — through a recent collaboration — Crate and Barrel. Shown: Bottna Cotton Upholstery Fabric.

Their online shop has a huge inventory of cool designer fabrics (many of them imported from Japan and other countries), and their blog, the Purl Bee, is an amazing resource for DIY project ideas. Shown: Handstitched Napkin Project from the Purl Bee.

Quadrille is a lesser known resource for 1970s fabrics from China Seas, Alan Campbell, and Home Couture. They sell mainly to the trade, but their site also lists ways for the public to contact them about sales. Shown: Alan Campbell Saya Gata Fabric.

Based in Boston, this shop specializes in 100 percent wool felt imported from Germany. This is the good stuff, available in a variety of thicknesses and colorways, and you can buy it by the roll or in smaller sections. Shown: 2mm Felt, starting at $75/yard.

A darling of the blogosphere, Amy Butler has a colorful, retro style that's all her own. She's built a small empire of fabrics, pillows, and home decor, and she releases new collections seasonally. Shown: Love Collection, 2011.

Established in 1944, Lewis & Sheron is a longtime Atlanta decor fabric shop. They have an easy-to-use website, free shipping on all U.S. orders, and decent prices. Shown: Spicer Basket Ikat, $20/yard.

This discount fabric shop has prices starting as low as $1.95/yard. Their inventory tends to be more traditional and they've got some nice upholstery basics. Shown: Premier Prints Cotton Drapery Fabrics, $6.95/yard.

They have a ton of bright, Josef Frank-ish fabrics. Most lines are affordably priced 100 percent cotton, like this Frederika Fabric, which sells for $7/yard. Unfortunately, most fabrics aren't available online — you have to shop for them in-store.

Always a good place to look for deals, Jo-Ann has a nice e-commerce site and a ton of locations across the country. We found this Home Essentials Muse Black Fabric on sale for $5/yard (regularly $10/yard).
