  • Founded by: Jessica Spencer

Jessica Spencer has always had a particular sensitivity to what “good spaces” feel like and the profound effect they have on our daily lives. This sensitivity to the world and environments (both natural and man-made) led her to pursue a career in design from a very early age. She worked in design studios both on Lake Winnipesaukee and under the Big Sky in Montana for several years before deciding it was finally time to go back to school to get her interior design degree. In the years since graduating, Jess has made it her mission to lend to all her work her unique intuitive design sense. Alchemy/Designs represents the idea that the spaces that make up our world are far more than the sum of their parts; our homes undergo a certain transformation over time and Jess believes that there’s a certain magic to it - a certain alchemical process that makes our home like our second skin. Being so, Alchemy/Designs seeks to bring beauty, function, and fantastic design to everyone’s home; whether newly built, undergoing renovations or remodels, or just needing a little well-deserved pick-me-up after years of humble use.

Interior designer Jessica Spencer recognizes that there are two kinds of home decorators — those who need a little design hand holding and those who have their own definite vision. Alchemy Design Studio is a destination for both. Spencer offers both remote design services as well a full web shop stocked with furniture and accessories.

Name/Title: Jessica Spencer/Owner & Interior Designer, Allied ASID

Launch date: July 2012

Inspiration for opening: I felt that there was a need for an online boutique that offered carefully curated and unique pieces for the home, while also offering personalized service to each and every customer. If someone is interested in something on the website, all they have to do is pop me an email or give a call and they can ask me anything they like and get my professional opinion. I wanted to combine the convenience of online shopping with the personalized service of an interior design studio. And for people who’d like even more personalized design help, Alchemy/Design offers a remote design service for a very reasonable fee. So whether our customers just want to find a cool, unique piece for their home and they know exactly what they’re looking for, need a little help in the right direction, or need full interior design services, near or far, Alchemy/Design fits the bill!

Merchandise source: We source from companies that we feel further our design aesthetic - imaginative, eclectic, high-quality, whimsical, and timeless. We try to work with only US-made companies that maintain a high ideal of craftsmanship and a history of standing behind their products. As an interior designer, I’ve never been able to source items for clients that I know won’t hold up, so Alchemy/Design Studio only carries high-quality, hand-crafted pieces that will stand the test of time.

Best selling item: Our “Florabunda” rug has done great, I think because it’s a colorful and fun rug that also is totally classic and could be moved around the home throughout a lifetime to freshen up a variety of spaces. Also, our “Oh, Deer” pillows (third photo above) have done well with their bold, graphic pattern and coloring.

Your favorite item: My current obsession is the “Sands of Time” rug. It’s slightly tribal-looking, but has a wonderfully neutral color palatte with just subtle splashes of color. The rug looks just as chic in a New Hampshire lake home as it does in a Big Sky mountain home. I’m also really into the new painting we have called “Marius” - it’s nautical and I love the bold colors, graphic styling, and vintage appeal.

Favorite store (other than your own): All the little antique stores around my home on Lake Winnipesaukee and in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. The smallest towns have the biggest gems. I once found a Stickley coffee table at a little antique barn in NH and got a fantastic deal on it. I love finding a great antique piece and giving it new life, whether it be in its current “kinda seen better days” condition, (which can be lovely in its own right), or refinishing it to breathe new life into it.
