Walking into Iconi Interiors in Madison feels like stepping onto an elegant movie set from the 40s or 50s. Vintage lamps and cocktail tables are set in vignettes with sleek new sofas and chairs. Modern rugs keep the settings fresh and not musty. There's a surprise around every corner, and that intriguing quality keeps customers exploring slowly and carefully, not wanting to miss a thing. Owner Coni Marotz specializes in finding the old, the reclaimed, and the new that have a certain elan in common. Coni scours the central states with her husband Mike ("I’m a Midwest picker," she laughs), carefully finding a mix of furnishings, accessories, lamps, glassware, barware, and artwork. She and Mike refurbish many pieces, often transforming them and giving them new purposes—like the stereo cabinet she turned into a funky retro bar. Or the sewing table and Art Deco dresser she retrofitted into a vanity and storage in a client’s bath. A second-generation upholsterer helps revamp the vintage pieces with care.
In her store, Coni mixes new upholstered furniture with vintage and upcycled pieces. She has rugs from Chandra, Surya and Jaipur and custom bedding from Blissliving and Eastern Accents. Custom pillows are made in the store’s workroom.
But my favorite part of Iconi is the sleek central area that highlights her stock of vintage barware. A crystal chandelier hangs overhead. Glassware, cocktail shakers, chrome ice buckets, and mirrored trays sparkle against dark grey walls. You just know that any concoction you drink from one of these glasses—whether it’s a hot toddy, a gin daisy, or just water—is going to feel more special. And if we can be green and a little glamorous ... what’s wrong with that?
