Known for its original colorful graphic textiles since 1951, when Marimekko first showed their cheerful prints in Helsinski, the company was an instant hit. For years only available in capsule collections or in Europe and Scandinavia, New York City finally has its own flagship store that is a welcome dose of color therapy.
Now that the company has expanded beyond clothes, the items that fill the store are a wide range of things for the home, from trays to mugs, pillows, bedspreads, dishes and decor. Tablecloths and pillows can be bought as is, or fabric can be purchased by the yard from the floor to ceiling selection and cut by the friendly and knowledgeable staff.Located across from the Flat Iron building in Manhattan, if you live in New York or are just visiting, it is well worth checking out some of the most cheerful and bright things this Finnish company has to offer.

Huh? Marimekko fabric and goods have been carried by Crate and Barrel for many years. If you aren't in New York or near a Crate and Barrel, most of their items are also sold on-line.

Who can be sad when Marimekko is around?
I'm sad when Marimekko is around. I work next door to this shop and it's pure torture walking by every single day, knowing that I can't afford to buy all the adorable everythings in there.
I just went to the flagship store and it is absolutely gorgeous. I bought a bowl that I know I could have purchased online, but there is something special about seeing a buying a piece in person. I had a ton of fun at the store (took some great pictures) and my 7 year old nephew had a blast too!
Definitely not for everyone as it makes me dizzy just looking at the store..haha.
It looks like the actual Marimekko store will have a wider selection than C&B does - it's a small part of CB's collection, as opposed to their whole store. Also, CB doesn't sell fabric online, only in-store, and they have a pretty limited selection that varies seasonally.
I love Marimekko. The prints and colors feel to me like a warm sunny day. I will certainly stop by the store the next time I'm in NYC.
Love Marimekko. I almost cried when I walked into the Los Angeles Crate and Barrel that carried it the other day and there was some boring mop display in its place. In fairness, the salesperson was super nice about telling me about the new Beverly Hills store but bah, humbug.
Also wanted to add there is no pvc in the store so thinks like coated fabric placemats and linens are child-friendly and non-toxic.
so shining and colorful, I like them so much.
Ooh, wow. I'm definitely going to have to stop by the next time I'm in NYC. I've been to the little shop up on the UES but they had such a small selection of items (still managed to snag some gingko print fabric at least!).
Crate and Barrel only carries a very small selection of what Marimekko offers and any one store only carries a selection of all the products and fabrics. Does anyone remember the old store in NYC - so beautiful but more restrained than these photos.
Lovely. I just wish they had softer fabrics and textiles.
