In visiting shops in Brooklyn, we felt compelled to revisit Matter, a design store in Park Slope (with a sister store in Soho) and to award it accolades for selling beautiful and cutting edge modern design. Matter is to Brooklyn what Moss is to Manhattan: a design showcase and modern museum for discerning design aficionados...
So many stores play it safe and won't dare to sell the big stuff (furniture) because -- let's face it -- how often do we buy a dining table and chairs? But Matter, owned and run by Jamie Gray, sells everything from glassware to dining room tables to art and pet toys. All are unique, restrained, beautifully made and bear an eye for fine design that is Jamie's own.
You will find items in his shop that you will not find anywhere else in the city, and Matter is often cited in The New York Times' House and Home section as selling the latest great item. Prices? Pretty expensive. There are some affordable home accessories to be found, but in general, expect to make a hefty investment. Matter specializes in British design collectives, and if you're looking for pieces from the likes of BarberOsgerby or Established & Sons, they should be first on your list.
*Matter also has a Soho store at 405 Broome Street, New York, NY 10013, Tel #: 212 343 2600
