Dylan’s Rustic Meets Modern Space

What to do when the baby you expect to be a girl turns out to be a bouncing baby boy? Call an expert to help you rethink your nursery plans. That’s exactly what happened to this family when they were expecting baby Dylan. The couple had already started decorating the nursery with a backdrop of delicate dragonflies when they found out that the baby they were eagerly anticipating was actually a little boy.

Luckily interior designer Jennifer Jones of Niche Interiors managed to work her magic to salvage the space by bringing in rustic wood tones and graphic patterns to create a perfectly rustic, modern space for little Dylan. We asked Jennifer about the room and how it came together:

How would you describe the look and feel of this room? This space is vibrant, playful, and quirky – perfect for a growing boy!

What is your favorite piece or element? I love the orange elephant pillow and the artwork above the crib. It’s the small details that add personality and pull a room together.

What was the biggest challenge decorating this room? This was a unique challenge: The homeowners started designing the room for their baby girl. They called me when the doctor informed them that a boy was actually on the way! The wallpaper was already installed, so we had to find a way to make it work for a boy’s space. Rustic wood touches, saturated oranges and blues, and a graphic rug add the right amount of boyish charm.

What do others say about the room? Dylan’s parents love the room and they report that he spends a lot of time looking at the bright colors and animals.

Do you have any advice for parents creating a room for their child? Try to create a fun, inspiring space that can easily grow with your child. Opt for clean-lined furniture, neutral rugs, and grown-up light fixtures to avoid getting stuck with a baby room forever. Update the accessories and artwork as your child’s interests evolve.

If money were no object, what’s your dream source? I would love to use an original vintage classic in a kids room, such as an Arne Jacobsen Egg chair reupholstered in a funky fabric.
