Ursula's amazing nanny of over four years is starring in a new show on Cinemax called "The Girls Guide to Depravity," from which comes the memorable line, "The best way to get over a guy is to get under a new guy." It was a good reminder to me that amidst all the politics of dating, as an apartment therapist, I think that the BEST way to catch the person you want is to have a fantastic bedroom. Your bedroom is the clearest expression of how you are feeling about yourself right now and is bathed in your pheromones. Are they hot or cold?
As a former Waldorf school teacher who had a big struggle convincing parents that lotsa hours in front of the television wasn't good for their children, I was pleased to see this article on declining TV use, BUT the reason wasn't as heartening. For the first time, data is being shared that seems to prove that TV viewership has actually peaked in the US among young people as they spend more and more time watching shows and playing games on computers, iPads and mobile phones.
Not that ANY of you would ever need any help like this, BUT it is a fact that a fast growing segment of the interior design and furniture buying population is made out of... divorced, single men (the first part of this sentence is a joke - of course there are all types of readers in our audience out there and NO ONE wants to get divorced. Sometimes it just comes unwanted in the night). These men have money and standards and don't want to do it all by themselves. They've learned to delegate, and they want to get it done asap.
If traditional publishing is about "creating an experience," curating and highly editing the reader's passage from the front cover to the back, running a website like Apartment Therapy is much more about hosting a party for our reader community. There are multiple "front doors" and mediums that we flow into and there is no "end" as our database of posts is just about endless after eight years. Our job? To keep the room warm and inspiring, all the refreshments well stocked and a well lit open space for people to step forward and share.

While filming promotional videos for Cottonelle with conference attendees at the ALT Conference last week, the issue of which way toilet paper should be hung came up repeatedly. It made me realize that when you're living with someone, little things like this can spark big fights (it happened to me too). So, in the interest of airing this out once again, please first take the survey below and then head below the jump to see the Right Way and enter the wonderful world of TP design.
Late last Friday night I got back home from Salt Lake City, where I'd been invited to speak on a super cool panel about New & Traditional Media - super cool because it was with Deborah Needleman (WSJ) and Pilar Guzman (Martha Stewart). I also got to videotape conference attendees as they shared their personal style and thoughts on Jonathan Adler's bold new toilet paper roll designs for Cottonelle. It was a busman's holiday, and I was exhausted on Saturday morning as I woke up to play with Ursula in the fresh New York snow.
Dear Readers,
This is a super exciting day for all of us here at the office and beyond where a bunch of us work from home. We're all sitting behind our computers madly typing away on the blog, IM, Facebook and Twitter as the traffic ramps up, and we deal with tech issues, fan mail and questions that come with the territory of such a big change on a Monday morning.
We've been working on this redesign for at least two years, and I want to explain a little bit of the thinking behind what you see here.
DWELL just announced that they've completed the shakeup of their editorial team by naming Amanda Dameron to fill the leadership role that Sam Grawe left last summer. Considered a "small, independent magazine" by the publishing world, even though it's big in the design world, the real big shift is that Dameron will be working from New York City, not San Francisco. What does it mean that West Coast born DWELL will be run from New York? Who knows exactly, but it seems that if you want to be taken seriously, you've got to be plugged into the Big Apple.
