We're plenty familiar with Derek Chen and his work. In addition to being profiled on Apartment Therapy, he was also one of our Fall Color Judges back in 2007. While he's making the rounds to promote his newest project in collaboration with Newton Vineyard, he sat down to answer our Meet the Maker survey.

The key to making a table lamp is finding the correct socket set-up and mount. Some readymade kits already exist but, otherwise, you have to figure out what works best for your chosen vessel-turned-lamp base. I myself had a random wooden vase/candleholder that perfectly accommodated a basic globe shade from the hardware store. It was screaming to become a lamp, and I was more than happy to oblige.

In the meantime, if your outdoor space is in better shape than mine, follow the links for instructions on how to make one of these yourself.

Furniture designers are like my rock stars. I am in awe of anyone who can conceptualize a piece of furniture (let alone an entire collection!) and then beautifully execute it. These are ten designers that have my eye right now, international rock star status pending.
