Soap scum and water marks are ubiquitous in most showers and baths. So often we treat them as an inevitable nuisance that is hidden from most eyes and that we address when we deep clean the bathroom, have guests coming, or just can’t take it anymore. And then we look for quick fixes and hacks like the baggie method to tackle the clinging grime (nothing wrong with that!).

However, as with so many things, there’s a little thing you can do that, even if it doesn’t quite buy you a pound of cure, will buy you more time until you have to launch a full-fledged soap scum attack.

Get a squeegee, put it in your shower, and use it after every shower.

We have this one in our tile shower enclosed with glass, and it’s going strong after nearly eight years. This similar one, the OXO Good Grips All-Purpose Squeegee, though not quite as pretty, is half the price and has nearly 3,000 positive reviews.

Both these squeegees come with a strong suction cup holder that allows you to easily hang the squeegee on the glass door or shower wall. I’ve never once had an issue with the suction cup detaching (ours is on the glass door). The convenient suction cup holder keeps the squeegee looking like it belongs, gives it a place, and keeps it within arm’s reach for your 30-second, ounce-of-prevention, after-shower task.

By squeegeeing your shower walls and especially your glass doors right after you shower, you swipe away the water that would otherwise linger and leave those tenacious soap scum spots. Soap scum will still build up over time, but it’ll be a much longer stretch of time. And there’s some car window-washing fun in squeegeeing. Or is that just me?
