People say bright ideas often come to them while taking a shower. But the shower ceiling in my vintage bathroom was where good ideas got lost. The blank, uninspired white square, punctuated by a tarnished flush mount, did nothing to inspire a brainstorm and was far from spa-like. I’d been dreaming of some sort of makeover that didn’t involve a full demo for more than a year. My go-to muse? The constellation ceiling of Grand Central Station’s main concourse in New York City.

I’ll admit it: I owned my old set of bath towels for way too long. They weren’t even high-end; they were some budget-friendly towels from Target that were not built to last for the amount of time I used them. The material, even though it was thin, took hours to dry fully and the ends were fraying toward the end of their life. I never wanted to stay wrapped up in them, either. They felt threadbare even early on.

Seriously, I had no clue this was a thing!
