Bathroom storage can be tricky — especially if it’s a small, shared space. Given that there are millions of people with this exact challenge, it’s no wonder that I’ll often come across folks who come up with the same solution, however unique it might be. To me, that’s proof that the method is tested and validated. Toronto-based Katie Nielsen and Apartment Therapy contributor Trisha Sprouse fell into this special category, three years apart.

Katie and her fiancé, Liam Grubb, have shared a 430-square-foot one-bedroom apartment for two years (but Katie’s lived there for five total). The small medicine cabinet and single under-sink cabinet weren’t enough storage for their products. So, Katie used an IKEA BEKVÄM spice rack to create more storage space. (Just like Trisha did a few years ago.)

Why She Used a BEKVÄM Spice Rack in Her Bathroom

“Storage has also been a constant challenge, especially since Liam moved in and we went from one person to two people living in 430 square feet,” Katie explained during the House Tour. “We’ve had to make use of every inch, including awkward spaces like the narrow gap beside the fridge or the space underneath the couch, as well as vertical space.”

By hanging the IKEA spice racks in the bathroom, Katie and Liam can easily reach the products they use more often. When guests visit, items like facial pads, tweezers, or nail trimmers are easy to find, so guests don’t have to rifle through their drawers.

Why the BEKVÄM Spice Rack Works in Bathrooms

The IKEA spice rack works well in bathrooms because it organizes clutter without taking up too much space. Trisha also had a small vanity and wanted to free up room. She was already using the spice rack as a bookshelf in her kid’s bedroom, so she figured it would work well in bathrooms because the railing would block products from falling out.

If your bathroom wall is tiled, don’t worry — you can hang the IKEA spice racks, too. They’re fitted to be hung from regular or tiled walls (the screws are sold separately). Thinking outside the box helped not one but two people with their bathroom storage, and likely a lot more than that. If you need more space in your loo, consider this method.
