My little New York City bathroom is your standard apartment fare. You have to maneuver strategically to access the toilet, the sink is super-tiny, and somehow there’s not a single electrical outlet. But it does have one thing going for it: a ledge on the bathtub.

At first, I put shampoo, conditioner, and body wash bottles across the ledge, but this ended up being a visual nightmare (and the clutter made it hard to find what I was looking for). Then I came up with an ingenious solution: Why not use a spice rack?

Why I Put a Spice Rack in My Bathroom

This isn’t the first time I’ve used a spice rack for something totally unrelated. I have them in the kitchen, yes, but have also used them to help organize perfume, and I’ve put one on my bathroom vanity for skincare products. Another Apartment Therapy writer also loved the idea of using a Dollar Tree spice rack in the bathroom, so I knew I had to try it.

For my shower, I chose this three-tiered acrylic spice rack from Amazon that comes in a two-pack. I opted for it over other options because it was inexpensive, clear, and, most importantly, sturdy. I’ve tried expandable versions before and they’ve ended up getting a little wobbly over time. Also, acrylic is a must in this splash zone — wood would rot or get slimy pretty quickly — and the compartments are wide enough to hold most items I keep in the shower.

What Happened When I Put a Spice Rack in My Bathroom

Putting the tiered spice rack in my shower to organize my toiletries has transformed my bathroom storage. Overall, I’m quite pleased with my ingenious idea, and I love that it instantly made my entire shower look less cluttered. It helps me find items more easily, which makes for a much more enjoyable shower experience.

About once a month in my routine cleaning, I’ll remove everything and wash the rack. Shampoo splatter, dust, and stray hairs end up on the spice rack, just like they do elsewhere in my bathroom, so this keeps everything looking pristine. I can’t wait to find another spot to use my beloved spice racks.
