Name: Elissa Hall Location: King; Portland, Oregon Size: 1,200 square feet Years lived in: 1 year; Rented When Elissa finally found her Portland home, it had been preserved to honor the integrity of the architecture while also gently renovated to make the most of the space and available light. With the gift of a clean palette in front of her, Elissa’s challenge was then to make the space homey and reflective of her taste while nesting in with two other roommates.

Name: Megan and Leif Location: Longfellow — Oakland, California Size: 1,100 square feet Years lived in: 2.5 years; Rented Hailing from Wisconsin via Chicago and Portland, Megan and Leif now find themselves in Oakland with a home that pays homage to their past interlaced with the sunny muse of their present. With Leif working from home as a writer and Megan an aspiring creative director, the couple have created a space that strikes a balance between practical and inspirational.
Name: Christina Birch and Lars Fynbo and their two sons Location: Zealand, Denmark Size: 39 square meter (420 square feet) Years lived in: 8 years; Owned When Christina, a photographer, and Lars, a sociology professor, decided to continue living in central Copenhagen with their two boys, they knew they’d also need a place in the country for peace and nature.
Name: Susanna Luck and Tod Hyland of pistils & stamen Location: 1515 NW 23rd Ave in Portland, OR Size: 98 square feet Years owned/worked: 14 months Susanna was born in England and came to the US in her twenties for art school. After years in San Francisco and Los Angeles, she found herself in Portland working as an animator before suddenly and unexpectedly losing her job.
Name: Francesca and her cat, Shady Location: Southeast Portland, Oregon Size: 421 square feet Years lived in: 9 months: Rented When Francesca moved to Portland from upstate New York two years ago, she only brought a few suitcases with her. Since then, she’s been working for Airbnb, where she finds herself looking at beautiful interiors all day long and nesting beautifully in the first space she’s lived in by herself.
Name: Harben Porter and Ryan Moses and Bowie the cat Location: San Francisco, California Size: 550 square feet Years lived in: 3 years; Rented Harben and Ryan found their apartment on Craigslist and decided to take a chance on a post that did not include any images. Luckily for them, the place looked perfectly charming and quirky on sight.

During their time in the basement apartment, they had limited light and space so they used bright colors and decor to give the space life.
Name: Heather and Daniel Mount Location: Denton, Texas Size: 1,700 square feet Years lived in: 6 months, owned When Heather and Daniel started looking for their first home, they had been nervously watching the intense Denton market for a year. The first few houses they saw were supposed to give them an idea of what they could get in their budget, but when they walked into the first house of the day, they felt a connection.
Name: Jess, Evan, and Auggie Location: Portland, Oregon Size: 1,700 square feet Years lived in: 4 years; owned When Jess and Evan were on the market to buy a home, they knew they wanted a change from the Portland bungalows they’d spent the last few years in. They knew they wanted something mid-century, but with the market becoming so competitive, it felt more and more difficult to find a place.
Name: Rosie Acosta and Torry Pendergrass Location: Portland, Oregon Size: 2,300 square feet Years lived in: 1 year; owned Rosie and Torry found their 1946 Cape Cod style home during a very arduous search for a home to buy. Everything in Portland was getting snagged right from under them and they’d already put in at least two offers on other homes before they found this one.
Name: Margaux Rust, Drew Daniels, Juniper and Gypsy Location: Echo Park; Los Angeles, California Size: 1000 square feet Years lived in: Rented 1 year We first got a peek at Margaux and Drew’s home during their House Call last fall, but since then they’ve already rearranged and refreshed their space (as they often do). The house was built around 1910, when the neighborhood was filling up with large Arts and Crafts or Victorian homes.
Name: Ashley, Matt, and Zucca (the cat) Spinelli Location: Central Haight — San Francisco, California Size: 1,200 square feet Years lived in: Renting 2.5 years Ashley and Matt moved to San Francisco from NYC, and wanted to live within biking distance of their jobs, while also having the ability to walk everywhere. Fortunately, the Lower Haight is centrally located within easy access to public transportation and urban thoroughfares and surrounded by four of the city’s best parks.
Name: Kyle and Alex Location: Tenderloin — San Francisco, California Size: 450 square feet Years lived in: 4 years rented After 20+ apartment viewings, Kyle and Alex settled on this 1920s apartment in the Tenderloin neighborhood in San Francisco. They had some basic criteria for their would-be apartment.
