Before & After: A Front Garden Goes From Boring to Blooming
This sad-looking border in front of my house is the first proper gardening project I ever tackled. My previous experience of growing things was limited to a couple of window boxes and some short-lived herbs in pots, so when I put a few plants in the ground last spring, I wasn’t sure how they would turn out… One year on, I have a blooming border of three different types of lavender, alliums, agapanthus (African lilies), nemesia, and daisies.

Before & After: An East London Kitchen Gets a Vibrant Makeover
The kitchen in Sam’s new house couldn’t have been much worse. There were mice everywhere, the units were filthy, the cooker was condemned by the gasman, the back door could only be opened with a crowbar and worst of all, there was a mysterious smell, which they eventually tracked down to an open waste pipe running straight into the kitchen.

Rebecca’s Reveal: Pearl’s New Bedroom
We did it! After endless deliberations about flooring — oak? bamboo? laminate? — an epic online and real life search for curtain fabrics, and several trips to IKEA (it was the cinnamon buns and free coffee before 10am that kept drawing me back!), we finally got our act together and got on with the real business of transforming Pearl’s room.

Rebecca’s Style Cure Progress: Planning a Gallery Wall
Pearl’s new bedroom is at that looking-worse-before-it-looks-better stage. My husband has pulled up the old carpet, pried the skirting boards off the wall and started laying the bamboo floor. Meanwhile Pearl and I (aided and abetted by the cat) have been busy planning a gallery wall of her own paintings and drawings. I love seeing children’s artwork displayed in a home. I love the color and energy and confidence of kids’ paintings.

Rebecca’s Floor Plan: Nailing the Layout
Drawing up a proper to-scale 3D floor plan was a revelation. My usual method is to drag furniture around the room shouting things like, “Yes, it’ll definitely fit there! It will! It’s going to look amazing! Okay, so it’s bit tight, what about over there…?” Until everything has found a home and I have discovered new arm muscles I didn’t know existed. I used Autodesk Homestyler to make a free floor plan for my daughter’s new bedroom.

Rebecca’s Style Scouting: A Riot of Color and Pattern
I always had myself pegged as a clean lines, simple shapes, less-is-more kind of person, but inspiration shopping for my daughter’s room unleashed an exuberant pattern-mixing, color-clashing side of me that I didn’t know existed. Maybe I shouldn’t be so surprised as another glance at our Style Cure interview responses shows a shared love of all things colorful and uplifting.

Search and Destroy: How To Get Rid of Sweater Moths
Usually the first sign you have a moth problem is when you pull out a sweater and discover it’s laced with tiny holes. Clothes moths are sneaky little pests. They like to lie low in dark corners, snacking on your best cashmere. They rarely take time out from feasting to flutter about your house, so before you start swatting at each and every moth you see, here is what you need to know. Tineola bisselliella and Tinea pellionella are the two most common types of clothes moths.

5 Simple Ways to Make Your Bathroom Feel Like New
It can be easy to overlook the bathroom. It’s a functional space first and foremost, and unless you like long hot soaks in the bath, you probably don’t spend a whole lot of time in there. But that is no reason to neglect it. I’ve lived with a few lacklustre bathrooms — in rented apartments and then in my own place before we got around to renovating — and it got me down.

Rebecca’s Cure: The Perks and Perils of a Media Fast
“We’re having a media fast,” I announced. Once I had explained the words media and fast, my children set to shouting and complaining. “We don’t care! We’re watching telly!” Fortunately I had a giant box of Star Wars Lego and a Dora the Explorer jigsaw (both Christmas gifts) to distract them. My five-year old got on with building Rancor’s castle or pit or something, and my three-year old, with help from me, started her jigsaw. Easy.

Rebecca’s Cure: Getting the Kids Involved
Cleaning and organizing your home is not easy if you have small children underfoot. If you have a baby, forget about it! I know you can put them in a sling and still do the vacuuming, but have you actually tried it? It’s like doing one of those extreme military workouts. Mine are past the baby stage now, so I decided it was high time we tackled this Cure as a family.

Rebecca’s Cure: Defunking the Bedroom
Sometimes the hardest thing about a project is getting started. Particularly when it requires time, energy and know how. But on top of my daily Cure assignments, I am determined to get cracking on one of the tasks from my project list — namely demusting the oak chest in the corner of my bedroom. Each time I pull out a drawer, I think “Ew! Really gotta do something about that old people’s home smell.” Then I close the drawer, forget about it, and do precisely nothing.

Rebecca’s Cure: Creating a Project List
My house definitely needs a hefty dose of the January cure! We moved in two years ago full of enthusiasm to renovate, remodel and redecorate, but somehow ran out of steam (and money) and the process just stalled. The upshot is that while some of the house feels like ours (the bathroom my husband put in and the kids’ rooms), other areas (the 1980s pine kitchen and the drab hallway) are just crying out for some TLC. I started off on the front porch feeling pretty confident.
