This Cheerful Bookshelf Refresh Is an Instant Infusion of Springtime
When we finally start to get a peek of spring, the itch to refresh our space soon follows. The new season’s fresh scents and happy hues inspire us to zhuzh things up a bit: a bright throw pillow here, a fresh floral print there. It’s fun to infuse our homes with subtle updates that make us smile and celebrate warmer, sunnier days.
We asked interior stylist Tanika Rottura how she’d welcome the seasonal shift into her space. We loved her Eclectic Gems mood board so much that we started thinking about how to use it in the real world! So here’s a simple small-space refresh that’s inspired by springtime colors, textures, and scents — because scent is one of the most powerful ways to set a new tone in your space.
Inspired by Tanika Rottura’s bold and eclectic bedroom update, we reimagined an area of the home where a little restyling can make a big difference: the bookshelf. Tanika’s design announced the arrival of spring with a mix of sherbety hues and rich gem tones that speak to her vibrant personality. She complemented the whole look with the similarly vibrant aroma of the Air Wick Essential Mist® Hibiscus and Blooming Orchids scent. The discreet diffuser fills the room with a gentle, fragrant mist that’s infused with natural essential oils, giving your space an extra dose of springtime magic.
“The best way to get out of a rut is to change the color scheme in your home,” Tanika says. “I think it’s nice to have a fragrance that goes with the season, too.”
Taking a cue from Tanika’s confident use of color, we revived and restyled a bookshelf with a mix of subtle and bold hues. The backdrop is full of bright neutrals, from the white bookshelf itself to natural accents like ceramic vases and planters. But there are plenty of saturated colors to be found, too: They pop up in unexpected spots like a handwoven African basket, a whimsical lion figurine, and vibrant geode bookends.
Of course, if you’re going to read, you need light! Darling mushroom lamps add a sunny glow that’s way nicer than harsh overhead lighting. And since bookshelves are first and foremost about storage, we added a chic geometric box to the mix. It doubles as decor while corralling odds and ends like chargers, remotes, and coasters. Pro tip: Placing a sculptural object on top, like this limestone chain, makes the stack look stylish and intentional. Add a couple of vases of fresh flowers — plus the sweet aroma of the Air Wick Essential Mist® Hibiscus and Blooming Orchids scent — and this spot now sings spring.
