I accumulated art made by friends, signed record albums, and random things that remind me of my childhood until I had enough to fill this gray accent wall. It's a constant work in progress and I've really enjoyed seeing how one adjustment completely transforms the entire look and feel.

Household: Me, myself, and I

Have any design professionals worked on this space? No

Do you currently live in your Small/Cool space full-time? Yes

Describe your space:

This space has so much character. I would say about 85 percent-plus of everything I own was either purchased secondhand, at an antique shop, or made by a local artisan or friend. Each item tells a story. The architecture in itself is so unique. It was built by a painter, which is why it has such amazing natural light. I like to think they would appreciate that an art school graduate now lives here.

Did you DIY anything in your space? And, if so, what's your favorite DIY?

I’ve DIYed a few things, but my favorite is my TV console! It was $40 at a thrift shop and I just needed something at the time. I gave it a temporary makeover, always thinking I’d replace it. After a few years, I decided it was doing its job and I just had to get creative with the bones; I replaced the door fronts and used pole wrap to give it a fluted texture. A few fresh coats of paint later and it was an entirely new piece!

How do you make your small space work for you and feel bigger than it really is?

The built-in storage bench has been a lifesaver for things like large plastic tote bins and gardening supplies. I incorporated tall shelves to display items vertically and took advantage of the beams for hanging plants, to add dimension to the space and help the high ceilings not seem so disconnected. Investing in a desk that mounts to the wall saved up a surprising amount of space since there are no legs — just a few square inches is a lot when you live in a studio!

How does your home reflect you?

My family shopped mostly at thrift shops growing up and as a kid, and that used to embarrass me. Thinking back, I just laugh. Finding unique items are some of my fondest memories — the day, who I was with, and what caught my eye about it. Visiting secondhand shops with my grandmother when I visit home is one of my favorite things to do now. I fully embrace that I come from such a thrifty family.
