Maybe it’s so much time spent at home lately, but when we think about interior design right now, we want one thing: drama. At this year’s Small/Cool Experience, designers Jaclyn Journey and Amanda of Jacobs of Journey + Jacobs agreed — and they delivered big time, with lush fabrics, moody colors, and furnishings that command attention. Oh, and deep cherry red walls. Let’s take a closer look at the Moody Musings trend room they designed.

Seating That Stands Out

A dramatic room needs a bold centerpiece. Journey + Jacobs chose the custom Maxwell Sofa by Interior Define, designed by Apartment Therapy founder Maxwell Ryan. Maxwell’s namesake sofa is comfy and approachable but still a showstopper, with a modern low profile and luxuriously deep seats in touchable greige velvet. You can customize this sofa in over 100 different ways with velvet, leather, tweed, and more. Head to Interior Define to order 10 free swatches and see what speaks to you. When you find something you love, you can save $250 off purchases of $2,000 or more with code IDSmallCool250.*

Accents with Attitude

With the stage set, Journey + Jacobs added some statement furnishings. The Atwater Pendant light balances bold and calm, with an overlapping coconut shell design in a natural hue. And let’s talk about those tables: The Root Console is a sculptural showstopper, while the (perfect) Illusion Table has more theatrics than a Lady Gaga concert. For mood lighting, the Keeley Brass Floor Lamp casts just the right level of glow. And for those luscious walls, they used Cherry Cola S130-7 by BEHR® Paint.

Finishing Touches with Flair

To complete the look, Journey + Jacobs incorporated plenty of evocative artwork — we love these moody portraits — and tabletop items that pack a glamorous punch, like this hammered brass tray. Even the houseplants have stage presence.
