2 Colorful DIYs (and a Creative Use of Wallpaper!) Gave This Bedroom a Romantic Update
Bedrooms are our spots for destressing and getting cozy — but that doesn’t mean they have to be boring. A couple of well-placed “wow” moments can help this room of respite feel stylistically interesting without being overwhelming.
For Madeline, that meant turning up the style in a bedroom she already loved. She came up with some clever and colorful DIYs that complement the room’s romantic architectural features, like the beautiful wood radiator cover and picture-frame molding. Then she headed to The Home Depot®. In-store and online, The Home Depot is a one-stop project resource, with a wide selection of power tools, hardware, and supplies as well as on-trend home furnishings and decor. Here’s what Madeline did.
Build a Better Bed
DIYs are a chance to stretch your creativity, which is exactly what Madeline did to turn her simple platform bed into a show-stopper. She started by creating an easy plywood headboard, which she then painted a dreamy blue: BEHR Marquee Sydney Harbour. The pop of color works beautifully against the wall’s picture molding.
Then she trimmed the base of the bed frame with oak basement column cover painted to match. This user-friendly wrap is designed as a decorative treatment for support columns, but it works great here as a textured “skirt” for the bed. Adjustable roof closure strips help secure the cover while allowing access to under-bed storage, for a seamless design that adds visual interest and inviting texture.
Create Statement Lighting
Next, Madeline added a wow moment in an unexpected place: the ceiling! She ditched drab overhead lighting for a beautiful chandelier made even bolder by a few clever upgrades. First up was an elegant ceiling medallion, which has romantic floral detailing that gives an old-world feel. Painted with BEHR Marquee Sydney Harbour to match the bed and window trim, it gives depth to this oft-overlooked space. And repeating a color story throughout a space is such an easy way to create a unified look.
When it came to the light fixture, Madeline opted for a classic brass chandelier with fabric shades — with a modern twist. She painted the entire piece, plus the edges of the shades, in Rust-Oleum glossy spray paint in Sunrise Red. This rich lacquered red makes an exciting partner for the serene blue of Sydney Harbour. Together, they give the room a dramatic but understated presence.
Finish Furniture with Flair
Madeline wanted to update her bulky, dark dresser, so she swapped in a more modern silhouette with a natural oak finish. The new piece is lovely as-is — but it’s hard to resist an extra finishing touch, right? And when she saw this French ticking spray-and-stick wallpaper, she knew just what to do! Covering the whole piece in this vintage-inspired design gave her a one-of-a-kind look that fits right in with her new, dreamily soft aesthetic. Plus, it looks great alongside her new nightstands.
