While real people and stories are featured in the article below, the following parties did not receive a personal loan from Discover.

Large rooms are a puzzle: How do you make the most of all that square footage in a way that feels cohesive, yet still open? When you want to create a space like that, start by not thinking of it as a single space at all. Distinct areas designed for a specific use or mood — aka micromoments — are our favorite way to approach styling a large space.

In our newest episode of Apartment Therapy: Your Space, Your Story, we did just that for Jesse and Erin, a couple rehabbing a huge historical home in Salt Lake City. Their re-finished attic had the potential to become a special space for their family, but it needed a plan — a big one! With a budget of $32,500, we reimagined the space to create distinct micromoments of style and function. The Apartment Therapy Mood Board tool helped us imagine, design, and even price our ideas: It’s a great place to turn inspiration into action, and its Project Cost Calculator, sponsored by Discover® Personal Loans, takes the guesswork out of budgeting.

If you’re considering a home improvement project, Discover® Personal Loans could potentially help with financing. Discover offers personal loans from $2,500 to $40,000, with flexible repayment terms that could help make budgeting easier. You could even lock in a fixed rate, and there are no fees.

Here’s a closer look at three transformative projects in Erin and Jesse’s new attic space!

Book Nook with Custom Built-Ins: $6,000, Estimated

The attic has several nooks and alcoves that were just begging to become micromoments. We turned this one into a mini library, with built-in shelving (installed by professional carpenters) to house Erin’s books, family photos, and other meaningful decor — like an antique candelabra salvaged from elsewhere in the home. With soft lighting and a comfy chair, it’s a cozy corner that still feels part of the larger space.

Window Sanctuary with Custom Bench: $3,500, Estimated

So that Erin could relax and soak up the beautiful natural light coming into this spot, we added a custom built-in bench to turn the area into a peaceful retreat. Professional carpenters installed the bench, and Kylie and Charlie added molding to nod to the home’s historic style. Decked out with pillows and a blanket, it feels like a secret spot: perfect for napping or quiet reflection.

Furniture and Decor that Divides the Space: $9,500, Estimated

Now it was time to create a central space where the whole family could gather. With a new couch, ottoman coffee table, and ottoman seating, we created a central living room micromoment. The area rug helps it feel contained, and the furniture layout encourages gathering and conversation, so it still feels cozy even though it’s in the middle of the room. In choosing the furniture, Erin had an eye on the future, inspiring ideas such as using a soft ottoman as a coffee table that would be safer for future grandchildren running around the space.

Meanwhile, across the attic in another space, there was a cozy alcove that seemed to be a natural spot for Erin to work on her writing. Outfitted with a desk, this nook became another unique zone to make this multi-purpose space even more “multi.” All of these pieces worked within a warm neutral color palette, so all our micromoments felt cohesive. Whatever mood Erin and Jesse are in, there’s a spot for them to relax, be creative, and spend time with family.

Renovations like these helped Erin and Jesse enjoy their home more, and could potentially increase the home’s resale value later on. If you’re dreaming of a home improvement project, Discover® Personal Loans could help you bring it to life.
