Chloé Sucrée actually lived in this dreamy home as a little girl, and, as she says, “destiny decided it was time to come back and live here,” now with her own family, dogs, and cats — a dream come true. The house itself is from the early 1900s and belongs to a sculptor who used it as studio. When he decided to rent out the house in the ’80s, he made some changes to add more rooms without touching the structure, so the light could continue coming in from the ceiling.
Chloé loves the home’s “personality, light, and authenticity,” which inspires her in her personal and work life, as the founder of “Being Biotiful,” a place to find recipes, tips, and weekly menu planning ideas. Her objective is to provide resources for seasonal, vegetable-focused, and delicious food, “without it seeming like an impossible mission.” She has written four books, with a new one coming out in September 2022. Her penchant for “naturalness, good vibes, comfort, and colors,” applies to both how she eats and how she decorates her home.
Apartment Therapy Survey
My Style: I don’t like to force any situation, I like the place to breathe and flow. My ideal color palette is neutral so I can add touches of strong colors. The key is great light, unique, restored pieces, and letting the house speak for itself.
Inspiration: My mom! She is the best decorator in the world, she has an excellent taste. I also like the Belgium style (“flamand”).
Favorite Element: The light and the staircase. It has a unique distribution.
Biggest Challenge: The unique layout of the house.
Proudest DIY: My mom (who lives next door) restores old furniture, so I can’t take the credit for her work on all my restored furniture!
Is there something unique about your home or the way you use it? The house itself is unique! The staircase for example was created as a spine to “suspend” rooms and create more ambience.
What are your favorite products you have bought for your home and why? Home spray form Zara Home.
Please describe any helpful, inspiring, brilliant, or just plain useful small space maximizing and/or organizing tips you have: In my room, I didn’t have space for two bedside tables, so instead I use the first step of the stairs next to my bed to have one.
Does your home reflect your home country/city in any way? A little bit of Belgium perhaps (which is where I’m from).
What are your favorite places to shop for home décor that can only be found in your country? Mercantic, Les puces de Paris, auctions, Zara Home, IKEA (for small details), Ridox.
Finally, what’s your absolute best home secret or decorating advice? My mother’s tricks: open spaces, the color white, and indirect lighting.
