Before and After: Here’s What Happened When Carrie Let Our Instagram Followers Redecorate Her Living Room
When Carrie and Matthew moved from a 1-bedroom apartment in the NYC area to a bigger home nestled in the woods of The Catskills, one thing was clear: They’d need a lot more furniture and decor to style their space. To get the job done, we asked our Instagram followers (aka you!) to help decide how to design their living room by voting on which items from The Home Depot deserved a spot in their new place. And the results are in! Here’s how your selections shaped her new space.
Carrie’s Style Brief:
My style is: mid-century modern meets cabin chic
My home vibe is: comfortable, quirky and colorful
My colors are: teal, orange, yellow, and natural wood
I will use this room for: watching tv, Relaxing, Sometimes working-from-couch
In her city apartment, Carrie’s style was strictly mid-century modern. But, she says, “when we moved to our house in the mountains, we quickly realized that we needed to infuse some woodsy, natural elements into our retro aesthetic.” With everyone’s help on Insta—and a bit of bravery on her part—this makeover really helped that vision come to life.
Carrie’s new living room turned out to be a great mix of the mid-century modern style she loved to begin with, along with some natural, more rustic finds that help the space vibe with its surroundings. The live-edge coffee table with hairpin legs and the colorful rug were instant hits. “We thought we wanted a very neutral tan rug in our living room,” she says, “but once we saw this blue Southwestern-inspired rug, it instantly made us want to keep it there forever.”
A neutral sofa and bright accent chair in tangerine were clear winners when it came to seating, along with a loosely knit pouf that adds a pop of color and a touch of cozy rusticity. One of the biggest decisions about the space was what to do with the plain white walls, but our Instagram fam came through! With your help, we turned the main wall behind the sofa into a gallery wall with modern paintings and hangings and found a landscape piece that helps tie all the room’s different colors together.
With some brassy, edgy lighting to give the living room a bit of a modern edge and faux flora for another touch of green, Carrie’s new living room feels both modern and earthy. And her favorite part? “I still can’t believe how high-quality some of the pieces are! They’re all super well-made and I can’t wait to tell people I got them from The Home Depot to surprise them.”
