Before and After: A Few Soft Swaps Turned This Living Room into an Entertaining Hub
One of the surest ways to make your space feel more homey is to entertain: Seeing friends have fun in your abode adds warmth that lasts long after they leave. Marvina’s airy, spacious living room is ideal for hosting, and she wanted to add softness to boost that stay-as-long-as-you-like feeling.
“I entered the New Year knowing that redecorating my living room space was going to be my main priority,” Marvina says. “It was my favorite room in the house, but it was feeling a bit dreary, and cloudy weather would intensify the dreariness. Now, with the new soft goods, it’s very calm and cloud-like.”
With a chic combination of throws, pillows, and other accents from Macy’s, Marvina added instant texture to her living room. She went shopping in-store with Apartment Therapy editor-in-chief Charli Penn and found just the things to enhance her living room for entertaining. Let’s see what they got!

Throw pillows let guests get comfortable, and they’re a great way to incorporate different colors and textures. A rich jewel-tone blue is an elegant pop against Marvina’s neutral sofa, as well as a great partner for this more subdued beige throw pillow. Metallic threading adds a glam touch.
Mixing in snuggly throw pillows amongst more decorative ones helps encourage lounging. This buttery soft midnight blue option is filled with comfortable memory foam, while these UGG pillows have a fluffy texture that’s impossible to resist.
When your guests reach for a blanket, you know they feel at home — and who wouldn’t want to snuggle up with this luxurious cashmere throw? The camel hue fits perfectly into the couch’s color story, too.
“The pillows and throws are all so soft and cozy,” Marvina says. “I love that they’re neutral, but then there’s the blue pop of color! They really make the space feel straight out of a magazine and add a super cozy vibe.”
A few entertaining essentials complete the scene: a MacKenzie-Childs serving tray and Godinger marble coasters — both in mod black-and-white — plus some stackable bistro glasses for happy hour. And faux shearling slippers are a must for relaxing: You can even keep extra pairs on hand for guests.
“I’m obsessed with these finishing touches. My living room feels like a breath of fresh air. I love it. I’m considering adding some sheer curtains to enhance the cloud-like feeling I get from the space now.”
